I wonder what cars he actually beat, and how modified the car is. It isn't a $500 E30 318i, the thing has an M3 motor in it.

    Still a cool story though.

Haha this was an awesome read although, it's not really $500 when you add in the mod costs now is it?

it may not be 500$ including mod costs, but it is still SIGNIFICANTLY LESS than 400k, what do you wanna guess, at MOST 50k? 75k?, whoopie than its STILL david vs goliath

    Read this thread^^^

Jalopnik did not include the opening story on how they got there. Having to back down a one lane road with a trailer during a gunfight, f*&king crazy.

I bought my first car in the UK for $900, it was a 1992 E36 316i with 150k miles on it. Went 0-60 in about 4.5 days, my favourite part about the car was the roll up manual sun roof. I serviced it every month until my buddy still managed to put it through a wall older than William Wallace. R.I.P. Star.

Story was full of win. Gotta love the part where he explains the upcoming bridge that wasn't even on the map. Pretty intense.

There gets to be a point where your money isn't really going towards performance anymore. You can completely tear down, blueprint, polish and rebuild your engine, modify the structure, lighten and tune your a rally car for way less than $100,000. Anything over that and you're just adding crap you don't need, you're just jacking up the cost for nothing. So you can't really compare the cost of the finished car, you should really be comparing the components used and the modifications done.

Ought to start a Rally Fund for the guy, we can all use PayPal to pay and feel like we have a piece of the action. Sell 1" squares on his car for $11 or so, can do the inside and out. Little 1" stickers with the pledge name written on. Stickers can be of a hundred different colours, look pretty cool I think. All the stickers can be used as a mosaic, like Nipple Jesus, etc. Mosaic ideas???

Beyond.ca might take a few as well.

Good story. Very inspirational.....but you guys DO realize he was racing in the Rally America class, right? He might have been on the same stages as the WRC class cars, but he was most definitely not racing against them.
