Default Propane tanks and use on RV.

well not sure if this is the right forum but, here goes.

I bought a trailer and the 30lb propane tanks on them are from the 70's and have not been recertified since '98. so i need to either buy 2x30lb tanks new, or get the current ones recertified.

When i was in Costco last week, they had 30lb bottles there for $49. not a bad price at all, but obviously they don't do recertification.

I found that canwest propane does, but for a recertification, it is $42+propane fill or for a new bottle, $110+fill.

Is there going to be any difference in bottles here? Like are the bottles on the trailer RV specific or will the bottles you can buy at costco ok?

I am trying to figgure out what the difference is here. So far, Costo is out in front by a mile.

The 30 lb bottles will use the same fitting as regular BBQ tanks, so you can pick up new ones from wherever and they will work.

$49 for a 30 lb at Costco... I assume that's empty? If it's $49 filled, that's an amazing deal and I would definitely pick up the pair.

i think it is empty, but i have heard a few people say that it includes first fill as well, but can't verify that.

I guess more than anything, I just want to make sure that these ones are ok to use with trailers and RVs, or are there specific RV propane bottles, and that is what is causing the big price difference.

I use the tanks off my trailer when my BBQ runs out.

    Same connection.

Suck when I have to get all three filled at the same time though.

I've owned 3 travel trailers over the years and have never had a connection issue with any of the tanks. As Nufy stated, I have interchanged my tanks between the BBQ & the trailer many times... no issues... same connections.

Other than price gouging, I am not sure what would be causing the price difference.

i know the connections will be the same, I am just wondering if there is a difference in the bottle or valve that is different, IE different rating of the bottle for at home BBQ use versus road travel on RV.

Not too sure if there's a difference, I can't see why there would be. I know that you can order cylinders that use a different style of valve & connection for use on forklifts/etc ... but as far as I know, the tanks that come with an RV are the same as those sold in at Costco, Canadian Tire, etc.

I could be wrong... but I do not know of a rule that states that an RV propane cylinder must be specifically designed for RV use only or vice versa.

i would not want re-cert bottles from the 70's on my trailer

Functionally they are 100% the same. The difference in price is probably due to the canwest bottle having an overfill protection device.

I'm pretty sure that all propane bottles have this according to law. regardless of if they are for BBQ or RV use.

Bumping a thread from the dead but I have a question.
I got an older trailer (89) and it has 2 30lb tanks. They are both past the 10 years or whatever. I do have 2 new 30 lb tanks sitting at home but I just realized the connection is not the same. Seems like it's the once used on the propane forklifts or what not.
Is there an adapter I can get or does anyone know what I should do?

I didn't search through the thread, but for 20 lbs, it is around $12.

propane tanks have two connections, internal threads which require a 7/8" wrench to install. The newer style is attaches to the external threads on the tank and is tightened by hand.

If it was me and I had the old style I would change the regulator to the new style and get an auto changeover at the same time. Only about $40 on ebay. Auto changover is nice to avoid those midnight trips out to change tanks.

Benyl, that's the price to fill a 20lb tank. I'm looking to purchase a 30lb tank. Apples and grapefruits buddy.

My guess is $18. $0.60 per pound.

They won't give prices over the phone, so I guess you are just going to have to suck it up and go there.

I still feel like you are talking about something different, I'm not concerned about the cost of the propane that goes in the tank, I'm concerned with the cylendrical metal storage apparatus itself (commonly known as a tank). I was using the term "30lb" to denote that I'm looking to purchase a tank with a nominal storage capacity larger than your standard BBQ tank. Actual capacity is slightly less than 30lbs of propane for most tanks.

I probably could go there, but if people wanted to phyically transport themselves to get information, the internet would only be good for funny cat pictures.
