Default Lowest Insurance Rate for A Teen

    Insurance rates

Hello everyone i am currently looking into purchasing a vehicle for around 15k - 16k. Currently i am insured under my own plan with PLPD (basic coverage) with the purchase of my new ride :P i hope to get full coverage. I currently live in Medicine Hat and am 18 years old. If anyone has any advice as to which insurance company is easy to deal with and has a low price please post.

    Thanks,
    Matt

Wow that would be great i had one small fender bender a year ago. My fault slid through an intersection going maybe about 5k/h and did like $1500 in damage to an SUV. And with my current plan i am paying around $2500 a year with no full coverage.

With 1 at fault you would be lucky to pay only $3500/year for full coverage on a ~$15k car. IMO get something cheaper and put the money saved away for a house, it is a way better investment than insurance at your age and in a couple of years once the accident is not so recent then upgrade your ride (and your insurance).

are you buying the car outright? or financing it?
I would never even question getting full coverage if you aren't buying outright. Even if you are, can you afford to let a 18,000 go without receiving anything back if/when you crash it?

Being that you (the OP) are a new(ish) driver your liability component of your policy is going to fall onto the government Grid program so that will be the same everywhere. However your collision & comprehensive will still vary from company to company. I also find that for guys under 25 often taking your collision deductible up to $1000 from the standard $500 can really help the pricing. Good luck!

Wow I totally wish I had followed your advice when I was 18. You nailed it on the head, save up for a house instead and drive a cheap neon or something, save on insurance.

I can only give this advice because I learned from experience. Instead of doing something smart with my money I spent 10's of thousands on 80's german sports cars and insurance, and now I have fuck all to show for it. If I had spent half that money on my house I would be a far happier man

    How does the saying go...

Experience is something you get RIGHT AFTER you needed it.

I think almost everyone on this board has been in that boat at one time or another

I did that too, on 90's and 00's sportscars and I know what you feel like. Cars are just depreciating assets now for me, you gotta pay to play

Thanks for being professional and writing nicely, makes it a pleasure to answer your question. I looked into that when I was 18. For a ~20k car, was around the same as posted above ~3500.

But I can only agree with the above posts. I assume you're buying the car yourself because you're asking about insurance prices. I would suggest that you keep your current vehicle or get a cheap vehicle to save money for the future. You'd be surprised how far a little investing and a little saving goes.
