yep - private is best. You'll save money that way, but better if you can take someone along who has decent knowledge about cars - or get it inspected before you buy.

I wouldn't go to a dealer for anything under 10k.
Think about it like this. 90% of people selling used cars are trying to hide something. Why would you want to buy from someone who's made a career of hiding automotive defects? I take my chances with the amateurs.
