Is your TV connected to a home theatre system? I.e receiver?
Reset the PS3 and make sure you have the latest firmware installed. a little while ago Sony released an update that changed the way you selected your audio output.

Try resetting all the settings and let the ps3 detect the setting fro you.
This happens to me every time I switch tvs on my ps3. IIRC, I hold down the power button until it beeps 3 times and after that it should be good. I'm sure there's nothing wrong with your ps3, just give that a go.

If you have the PS3 hooked up to just your TV with no receiver you may not hear anything because its playing an audio track that your TV cannot decode.
Had an issue just the other day with a movie that had no sound on my bedroom tv (no audio system) but worked fine in the home theatre.
You can change the audio output settings from bitstream to Linear PCM (its under the Video Settings menu)

when i first bought my ps3 i had the same problem. you just have to mess around with the sound setting till you find the correct audio setting and wa-la.
I don't want to start a new thread so I'll hijack. Any reason why my PS3 won't work (sound/video), when I move it from my HDTV to an SDTV? Do I have to do some sort of reset to get picture and then change the audio settings?
Edit - googled, just have to do a settings reset by holding down the power as was mentioned above for audio.

THIS
It is not the firmware, this is _NOT_ the reason it is free. Some people don't even think before they post.
It is sending the audio in a format that your TV cannot decode. In the Audio Settings section you can change the formats it outputs, check your TV's manual for what formats it accepts and only enable those, you will be fine after this.
