Default Anyone been to the Dominican Republic lately?

Has anyone been to the Dominican Republic since the earth quake in Haiti? I'm planning to book a trip there with my girl friend sometime in June. I'm guessing it's probably pretty safe to head there now, since the earth quake happened a while ago. For the people that have been there lately, is there anything I should be extra cautious of?

I was there with a bunch of friends about 6 weeks ago for a week. We had lots of fun and no concern whatsoever. Enjoy it!!

We stayed at Punta Cana. It is pretty clean. We enjoyed it. I don't know if I will go back anytime soon, because hot and humid cilmate is not my kind of thing. When I wake up in the morning, I feel sticky and gross. I had to shower 3 times a day and the shower water taste salty. I guess I'm just used to the dry cilmate in Calgary. But other than that, it was a fantastic worry-free vacation!!

This is the resort we stayed in.

^^ Cool good to know. Did you have to take any shots before going down?

I have stayed in that exact resort as well, It was pretty nice. I found it was more of a family/middle age resort though. Not a lot of 18-24 age people.

Yah, it does seem like a family style resort. We had 9 people in total, so we were never really bored. We go to the beach or the pool during the day, then we drink and play cards at night.

I recommend going to your family doctor and ask. For the most part the foods at the higher-end resorts are usually pretty safe.

A lot of doctors will reccomend the twinrix shots. Those are good for life, so it's probably worthwhile.
Some people reccomend malaria meds for the dominican, but I think that's overkill personally.

There are a couple travel medicine clinics around that might be handy if you have no family doctor.

I don't believe the Dominican side of the Island of Hispanola was effected by the earthquake in Haiti... maybe some light rumblings, but certainly nothing devastating.

We are booked to do our wedding at the Occidental Grand Flamenco Punta Cana in January... though it looks like that's going to be cancelled since family remembers commit to one thing and then back out when it comes time to collect money.

I still hope we get to go... even if it's just for the honeymoon and not the wedding.

I was there last week.....no probs whatsoever, stayed at Melia Tropicale and it was awesome.

We did wake up one morning to a small quake/aftershock....just enough to shake a few things off the table, but certainly nothing major.
