    Default Replacing a Bicycle Shim (and other mods)

    Hi all,

    I currently have an NVO component shim/stem combo in my bike right now, which looks similar to this:



    Now as you can see, the NVO component is specialized and has a specific bump that makes the stems specific.

    I recently bought a different stem and was wondering if it's possible to replace the shim so that it can accomodate a standard stem? Is it also possible to use parts from a junker mountain bike and if so, how do you replace a bicycle shim?

    Finally, is it smart to replace front and rear derailleur so that my current 7-speed Dahon Jack becomes 24-speed (by retrieving parts from a road bike)?

    For changing it from a 7-speed to a 24 speed, you'd need to change the entire drivetrain (chain, shifters, chainstays, get specific deraillurs for the gearing, etc..), and with that you need some funky tools, but it can be done if you want more gearing.

    ALSO, what do you mean by a shim?
    You should be able to pop the stem off and replace it to whatever length you need. Do you need a longer/shorter stem? Any newer stem should fit the fork just fine.

    The shim would be the pole that connects to the bicycle stem. These NVO stuff have a bump which is different from regular bicycle shims:

    Wow... Thats weird.
    Never seen that before, road bikes are what i mostly deal with, and the end of the fork is what the stem tightens onto.

    Looking at that, you could possibly do the same... Does the shim slide off? Then you could attach a road stem and put spacers above/below it if you didnt want to cut the fork.
    .. id have to see it though, i could be totally off

    Well... how it works at least. From what it looks like, I can just remove this NVO system and just put my normal stem onto the existing steering tube, yes?
