Default Advice needed on buying a car

Here's the deal: my friend wants to buy a reliable vehicle. He has about four grand cash he's willing to spend but he has TERRIBLE credit and has been refused left and right from all the Honda dealerships he's tried to get financing through. He's about ready to buy a car from a used car lot, something like a Grand Am, and spend about ten grand on it.

What should I tell him to do? Can he get a good reliable vehicle with the four grand cash he has in hand? Thanks.

Just keep an eye on the $5000 or less section on Kijiji. You can find some pretty good stuff there.

Um, you can find tons of great cars for $3000 or less.... Trust me. Keep checking the classifieds here and on Kijiji. I found my co-worker a REALLY nice excellent condition '92 Civic hatch for $1400 on here.
You just need to keep looking and be patient. Tomorrow Im buying a newer Probe GT fully loaded for $400. Good deals are around if you know where to look. Ask your friends like I did to find this one.

if your friend has terrible credit, I'm willing to bet he's also bad with money. He may even have some others debts. If that's the case, maybe he shouldn't be getting a loan for a car, he should be buying one he can afford with cash.
I agree with the posters above, there are some decent cars for $3000, and he'll have enough left over for the first years insurance. Then, maybe he can work on saving up enough for a flashier car over a couple of years.

Agreed, Tonnes of great cars out there ~3000. I bought my first car for $600 and it was pretty good. At the $2500 range you can get some decent cars with some extra for repairs. Just inspect well.
