What to expect if you don't kiss the asses
of the bullies & morons at the US border
He should really change his title to

"What to expect, if you think entering another country is a right and not a privilege, at the US border"

It's their country, their rules, their border guards. They can ask you whatever the fuck they want to about what you're doing in their country before they decide to let you in, turn you away, or arrest you.

    This.

The guy sure turns into a pussy all of a sudden once they start threatening him with jail!

That first officer though asked a phenominally stupid question though: What stores are you going to shop in. I mean, come on.

Hate to see what happens to this guy if he goes and visits any other country, one that has more strict rules.

    I.E. Vietnam

"Hey you, what are you doing here?"
"I'm here to visit a relative"
"Why? Why don't you just use the phone to keep in contact with them"
"Because my aunt is really sick, we don't know how much time she has left."
"How do you know she's dying? Are you a doctor?"
"No sir, but the doctors here told her she has cancer and doesn't have much time"
"No doctor in vietnam would tell a patient that. We'd cure her and she'll be fine."

And it goes on for about 20 minutes, including threats of taking the passports away.

No. Be a little bitch and represent Canada in a way that is less than glorious and you don't deserve to call yourself a Canadian.

Most of Canada doesn't deserve to call themselves canadian...

Sure, the guy was being a goof - I find it "odd" they can detain you and do as they please without giving an explanation...

I'd be "searching for goods" everytime a smokin femme came through. She can ask all the questions as to why she is being held / cavitied, mabey even become aggitated that im not answering her questions... as for me, the "border patrol", I can do what I want (so it seems).

    This guy is a moron...

But he should not be going to jail... The US already has over populated jails and they are just going to get more crowded when they send people who "push away" an officer to jail. The jails should be reserved for dangerous criminals or people that can be considered a threat to others (both financially or physically). IMO he should be fined or something along those lines.

I think i would feel the same way this guy feels if i was in his situation to start, (what stores are you going to. really?) but i would shut my mouth damn quick because it is out of my power...

What law is he breaking though? He is simply asking questions (and raising his voice) and being an asshole. Now we haven't seen the video so we don't know how he "assaulted" the officers so maybe that is why he was arrested.

I didn't know they don't need a cause to pull you over and search your car/question you. I guess it makes sense with random searches and whatnot.

I for one am not worried about how Americans perceive Canadians at all; it seems from that recording that those officers in that situation were pre-disposed to not liking Canadians anyway.
But seriously....pulling away from someone is considered "assault"??? what a bunch of pussies.

For once I agree with Pollywog, the border patrol is stupid. They get their job done effectively but it's at the cost of citizens being treated like children. When I was crossing the border to take a shortcut to Montreal I got the same thing:
    border - Where you going?
    me - Montreal
border - What are you going there for?
    me - See a friend
    border - Who's your friend?
    me - ??? Krystyna
border - Where does she live?
    me - <address>
border - how long have you known her?
    me - 7 years
border - What are you going to Montreal for?
    me - ???? To see a friend?
border - Who you going to see?
    me - What? Krystyna
border - What are you going to Montreal for?
    me - WTF?
border - Pull your car inside sir.

They pulled everything out of my car, put the dogs in it, knocked on all the panels to make sure they're not filled with drugs and interrogated me for 4 hours. I lost half a day of travel because they wanted to fuck with me. They took my Blackberry, looked through that, took all my receipts and verified them. They asked me why I have so many tools in my car.......tools! Why? Who cares? Finally after 4 hours the guy said he no longer wants me to be his problem anymore so he let me go through. It was my first time crossing the border, what an asshole. When I crossed back through at Sarnia I pulled up, gave him my driver's license, hardly even came to a stop and went right on through. Less than 10 seconds. This was August of 2007.

when I brought my STi across the cardston border crossing I stood in the office at the counter for 20 minutes before anyone payed attention to me. I was the only one in there, and there were 5 agents shooting the shit around the coffee pot. They knew I was there, glanced over at me every few minutes and carried on. Once they finally came over, he took my papers, looked at me, stamped them and gave them back....all without saying a word.

What the fuck is wrong with some people? You make $20/h at a border crossing you fat fuck, drop the superiority complex......

Question... can a person at the road stop say...

"Sorry officer, based on your conduct I am no longer interested in visiting your country"

... and just turn around and go back?

This made me lol. Almost deserving of a FFFFUUUUU comic here.

You can say that, and ask them if you can turn around, but you are already on US soil, so they can (and probably would) give you a harder time, and red flag you.

Personally I hate US border patrol. They are the absolute biggest asses in the world. I've not met a single one who's actually been nice. Peace Arch is one of the worst. But... I think they are trained this way. I think as soon as they go home, they're probably the nicest people. But at the border, they'll ask stupid and/or specific questions just to weed out suspicious people. They can easily tell if you're making shit up and/or getting nervous. So if they ask me a question, I just answer it. No hassles.

Canadian border patrol on the other hand, seem like a bunch of pansies LOL.

I don't get the problem people have with the border guards here. I don't even have a problem with the first officer's questions. They can ask you anything that they want. They're just trying to have a conversation with you and ask some detailed follow up questions to see if you're making up your story or not. Just answer the damn question honestly and don't complain. If you don't know what stores in particular you're going to visit, just say so, they'll likely accept that and move on.

As for their authority, I don't know how far the authority goes for US border guards (It probably goes further than that for Canada), but the Canadian border guards can search your vehicle and belongings without having to have any justification whatsoever. If they want to search your person, I understand that all they need is an objectively reasonable suspicion that you've committed an offence, or are lying, etc. Reasonable suspicion is a very low standard to meet, much lower than reasonable and probable grounds. It's extremely rare (almost unheard of) to have a search at the border determined illegal. They can certainly ask you any question that they feel like and demand an answer.

Cliffs notes: Be polite to border guards, they have an awful lot of legal authority to make your life miserable (far more than police) when you're trying to cross.

Maybe everytime i am crossing the border i will hide some "awkward" items in my trunk just to see their reaction when pulling them out if they decide to search my car. Then maybe i will explain to them an uneccessarily detailed story as to why they found it there

Living two minutes from the border in Abbotsford for years...I've dealt with border guards at both sides. There's no such thing as "US guards" are this and "Canada guards" are that. I used to go down two to three times a week. As for Canada...I had one girl (very hot too, I might add) actually told me to "just go" even though I had WAY too many cases of beer on me. She had busted me the week before and this time just smiled at me and said "go, before I change my mind". All the way to a DICK Canada agent who made my wife lug a 50 lb spare tire and jack out of the trunk just so he could look inside and he was rude as hell about it, while he made me sit inside the building.
Same for US agents. Some great, and some total asses. But out of it ALL...there's one thing you do; you say "yes sir, no sir" and answer every single question no matter what.

This douchebag brought everything upon himself.

I love the "I deal with law enforcement"... 5 minutes later..

Any follow up to how long he was detained for?
