Default Anyone ever have "Mosquito Magnet"

Or similar items they sell at Home Depot, etc. The type that use propane and octenol? I'm sick of having to wear bugspray in the evenings to enjoy my patio and hammock. Makes me reak and have to have a shower before bed.

    Something like this

    http://www.homedepot.ca/webapp/wcs/s...k=P_PartNumber

except the 1/2 acre version, which should cover a 80' radius if worked as advertised.

    Anyone have any experiences?

The best thing I ever found was this little citronela fan thing. It had little citronela beads in front of a electric fan. Even though it sounds pretty lame. the thing worked awesome and saved me from many swarms of mosquitos. I used it around race city.

That seems unnecessarily complicated just to kill mosquitoes.

    Why don't you use this?

I have no idea what the English name for this is but in the Philippines, this is prevalent all over the place.

i actually have a magnet in my backyard. in theory it works but just make sure its far away from where you are sitting. otherwise all the mosquitoes on the block end up in your backyard due to them being attracted. if you have a big yard they do work really good if you put it in a far off corner. after a day or 2 i probably had over a thousand of the little bastards in the net. haven't used it in awhile though. you have to watch them too because there is no way to know if you ran out of propane or not without keeping a eye on it.

Think it's called a mosquito coil or citronella coil

Yeah thats a mosquito coil, I've seen them at Wallys world.

Or try one of these: http://www.off.com/citronella-bucket/

Or get citronella oil in some tiki lamps.

Problem with those coils, is you need like 4 of them going around your patio table to really keep them away, and they don't smell to good, either.

I just don't want to stay away, I want to ANNIHILATE these motherfuckers.

Thanks for the info 2ndhandlude, I do have a nice corner to put it in (down in the rv parking turned into a dog pen), but it doesn't get any wind down there, and the instructions say to have it somewhere windy for them to catch the scent.... maybe I'll put it on my garage roof

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

Ran these magnets at my parent's acreage. Works wonders, there's a slough near by and the mosquitoes were thick. 2 summers ago, got back from a trip and had to watch over the place. I could barely unpack my car without flocks of moquitoes around. Cracked that bad boy out and set it up.

Propane lasts about 3 weeks? Rough estimate.
Octenol lasts a month or so and they're not cheap.

The down sides as I see them. It takes awhile for it to work that you'll notice a difference.
You need to watch that the propane is full (two tank swap works best)
You should clean it once a season for it to keep working.

If you're in the city, fences, etc. could prove difficult to have good results.

In the city, possibly that fan setup Phenix talked about.

Omg that's $800!! I was hoping it was something I could get for the shop here, considering we're right by a stagnant lake and I have cars running in an out, the mosquitos can be quite overwhelming at times. But I think in order to control ours we'd need at least two of those!

Actually, the 1/2 acre one is $350CAD, not including propane tank, so the 1 acre one is probably $500

I was hoping there might be some kind of plant that would deter mosquitoes from gathering outside my front porch. Anyone know if such thing exists?

I swear I didn't go out of my way to look for it, but this article was on the front page of a blog I frequenet:

My front porch always has a swarm of mosquitoes hanging out, so I'll give this a try and let you all know if its effective.

I find citronella to be 100% useless, even when burning multiple candles/coils at a time. Just this weekend, we even had mosquitoes fly into the burning citronella candle and get stuck in the wax.

The only thing I've ever seen actually work is bug spray, but clearly this is the best solution:

Same on the citronlla. Useless marketing scam for women.

Thinking of building a bat trap for the acreage...

This whole weekend I've been working on my transmission/underneath car. Not only are the mosquitos not afraid of entering the garage, but as evidenced by my hands (bitten to shit) not afraid to taste used ATF, WD40, engine oil, pentosin, misc underbody grease.

I've been contemplating this for a final solution, but I hardly think it would be cost effective.

When I was looking, nowhere in Calgary. However even if you did find one, its too late in the season. They're far more effective if turned on in the spring.
