After reading that you found reception was improved in areas, I went to my office and went down to the lower level where reception is usually bad, hoping it was going to be improved, but it wasn't.

My 3G battery used to last a day. Now the 4 lasts TWO days.

And you guys do know that your supposed to let the battery drain completely before charging for the first week or so to help the battery last longer.

Has anyone found an app or service, that goes and kills idle processes?

Yeah in the 80s you were supposed to drain batteries first time around. Now they don't have the same issues with charge memory.

there is a mild undertone or sarcasm in that first sentence too.

Yea, todays batteries don't need this kind of treatment anymore. Its actually better to just keep topping the battery up, no need to drain it completely and then charge.

This is something of an old wives tale now.

Ok so kill the sarcasm for a minute.

Do you let it die, then charge it for the first couple of time or what?

I want to sync the phone when i get it, but won't if it'll risk the long term battery life

^^ I do it, not sure if out of habit or I still believe it is better for the battery. However I read it is fine to charge it right away as the batteries dont need to be conditioned anymore.

Newer batteries do not have the same "memory" as the ones we had growing up.

thats fucked up because when i got my 3G i was having battery life issues and I called Rogers and they asked me if i charged it before it died when I first got it. OBVI i lied and said that I didn't. He mentioned that, that is one of the main reasons battery life fails after a couple of months hahah

Every lithium/NiMh battery device I've ever owned that has claimed to have no memory has benefited from frequent full discharges when compared to the identical devices my friends have owned who just charge them at random or leave them plugged in all the time. I know new batteries are better for no memory, but I've yet to experience this "zero memory" for myself. My 3Gs is a year old now and battery life is as good as day one. I fully discharge it 1-2 times a week minimum.

One example that sticks into my mind besides phones was an electric tooth brush my brother and I both had which used a memory-free battery. I would always fully discharge mine, he didn't. After a while his would last a few days before dying, mine would last 2 weeks just like it did when it was brand new, before having to recharge it.

I keep reading about how today's NiMh/Lion batteries can take any abuse you can throw at them but my personal experience consistently suggests otherwise. Just my $0.02.

It's not required in any shape or form. Unless Apple is truly ripping everyone off and selling you old crap batteries. If they manufactured them anytime in the last 5 years really they won't have any issues with charge memory no matter how much people think it does.

Tried reproducing the signal strength loss yesteray on a friends iPhone. It was at full strength and I was only able to get it to go down one bar covering the are with my whole hand. Could be the area I was in had strong signal so harder to reproduce issue. He has had it a few days and hasn't had any problems.
