Don't forget Motul. Waaaaaaaay better than Amsoil, endorsed by Subaru, Audi, VW, list goes on...Originally posted by Toma
The best synthetics:
Mobile 0w40 only
Amsoil
Red Line
Rotella T6 may be good, still testing it.
Penzoil is junk and loses its viscosity really fast and contains way too many detergents.
Interested to hear how your testing these to determine how they are better then others.Originally posted by Toma

Everyone that posted saying one brand was better or another no good, how are you qualifying that?

Reasons why Drumheller area wouldn't make a good race track venue...

By pulling the opinions out of their ass?
I don't mean to thread jack, but just wondering what the verdict is on MOA oil additive by BG. A few shops I know swear by it. I've been using it for years now with conventional oil. But it could just be alot of bull.
Link below in case you've never heard of it.

I use Amsoil Signature Series 0W-30. Slight increase in fuel economy for me. Long drain intervals which in turn makes it economical although I change the filter on a normal interval. Last time I had my valve cover off, the head was absolutely mint. Not a hint of sludge or contaminants at all. Even the bottom of my oil cap was spotless. Never had any metal on my magnetic drain plug. Noticeable difference in how the engine ran. The 0 weight is also awesome for -30C starts.
Amsoil Signature Series
I get this stuff for a pretty good deal and I will say that if I had to pay full price for it I probably would go with something a little cheaper like Mobil1 or Syntec because this stuff is pricey.
Can you guys tell how do you "feel" one oil is better than other?
Canadian automotive market/offer is pathetic when compared to what one can buy in Europe. On any decent gas station they have on average selection of ~ 20 synthetic oils. General public is 10 times more educated about car matters with easy access to magazines like Auto Motor and Sport, Auto Bild, etc.
People can read and compare never ending tests of tires, oils, batteries and detailing products.
I use Castrol Syntec 5-40 for my Jetta, when it's on sale at Crappy Tire, it's $27 for a jug, the cheapest 5W-40 oil I've found.
I'm using Motul on my MKV right now, but I might start using Royal Purple instead.
Good link, plenty of information, I read the Q and A portion. The forums look like the next leap in this interest.Originally posted by Sugarphreak
This is a great place to look up a lot of the questions... also to qualify some of the opinions and reccomendations made;

I know a guy here in Calgary whom used to work for shell on the F1 teams, he's beyond interesting and has forgotten more about the subject then all of us combined will ever know. It's so complicated when asking for the 'best' oil, what does it have to do best? Most hp, best durability, best overall combination of these? Can't be all things, and recently oils have been required to reformulate for better emissions and have removed some of the important ingredients to best protect engines under extreme use (not street driving).
I base my opinion on actual visual inspection of hard track use upon engine disassembly from many years (~20). Mobil 1 15w50 was my choice until it was reformulated, now using Rotella T6. Haven't torn anything down yet that I've used it in so can't say how good other then after three changes and many track days car is running strong and has actually decreased it oil consumption between changes.
Is there better oils out there? Most likely, motul 300v is the best I've witnessed during motorcycle racing from a friend that built more then a few top teams engines. It's very expensive and unless I was racing for money I wouldn't use it.

This is all very subjective. Sending oil samples in for analysis is probably the best way to find out what an oil is or isn't doing for your engine.

Best check out a forum dedicated to oil analysis.
Rotella T6 tends to do really well in a bunch of gas engine analysis studies on that forum.

eneos, lubromoly, motul, redline.... basicly anything that isnt your mainstream brand.. And it has to be ester based...
I am of the opinion that using a high $ synthetic for 10000 kms or more is worse than using a low $ conventional oil and changing it @ 5000kms.
BG additives with conventional oil is what I use.
this is a little off topic but i have never used synthetics yet but im going to start on my next oil change
stories i have heard is once you go to syns, you have to stay ? cause it will cause leaks ? is this BS ?
or is it fine as long as you dont mix the 2
might have to try that Pennzoil Platinum as sugarphreak suggested
Mix them, switch them, do whatever you want to them. As long as the synthetic oil says it is compatible with conventional oil you are good to go and I have never seen a synthetic oil that says it can't be mixed with all other oil types. And no, it will not cause leaks if you switch back and forth. Anyone who had that kind of experience probably just had a coincidental leak that would have started regardless of the oil used.Originally posted by 97luder

Using Rotella T 15w-40 now, I ordered one of those Blackstone Analysis kits so when I change my oil I'll take a sample(small cylindrical container they send) and sent it out, going to be using the Synthetic Rotella T, likely i the same weight next change.
Not real synthetic at all, and is garbage, unless you can get your hands on the German version.... which has proven impossible hereOriginally posted by Kennyredline
