I tried to get them both to lay as flat as possible. It does not have the raised brail in the corner either.

I dont want to take it to the bank, because if it IS fake, i want to keep it, and not surrender it.

Another thing that is missing is the small off color threads that are randomly in the bill as well.

Both bills are real.

The earlier bills (like the first one) have less anti-counterfeiting measure in them.

They didn't have the brail either. I had this same situation where I worked years ago, confirmed it was real. And if it is fake, its illegal to keep it.

WRT counterfeiting low denomination bills, $20 and up are looked at by most cashiers, where a few $5's will get squared up and dumped in a till without a glance. Easier to pass $1000 in $5 than $1000 in $100

spikers, just goto the bank and see what they say. if it's legit and you tell them you've had issues using it, they'll just exchange it for a newer $5

Yea we had a bunch of "fake" bills at my work over the weekend. When I verified them this morning they were all of the first generation restyling bills.

With those bills they don't have alot of security features like the new $5 bills, they do have watermarks but in different locations. The easiest way to check if these bills are counterfit is to put them under a black light and "5" will appear in locations not visible in natural white light.

Also that is not brail in the top corners, if you look at every new bill, it will basically have the same bumps, they are dimples to assist machines in dispensing cash. I work at a bank and a blind person informed me that all divots between bills were the same and none of them said anything.

There are also 10's without that metallic strip I believe but there were very few, and most have been taken out of circulation.

If you have any doubts bring it to your local bank and they will be able to confirm.

All fake bills should be turned into a police station. They track counterfit activities. When I worked at the bank they would pick up the fake bills and I can't remember what he told us, small denominations were the asian gangs and larger bills were the Hells Angels or vice versa. Yes, people counterfit 5 dollar bills.

a police officer came into my work the other day and told us how we could find out if a bill is fake. he showed us some crazy fakes, which were almost impossible to tell

I've been a bank teller for two years and I'm fairly certain that bill is real. Judging by the symmetry and over details, it is just the old $5 print, and the old $5 does not have the watermarked head when shone through a light. One easy thing to look for is just check out the micro-printing details of the bill. 90% of counterfeits will not be able to replicate the symmetry and minute details in the micro-printing.

Also, if you ever take a counterfeit to the bank it's their obligation to seize possession of all counterfeits. You WILL NOT get it back or get ANY compensation in return. If the bank ever does give you real cash back then they just laundered money.
