Default BMW Frozen Gray M3 paint a pain, owners must sign agreement about its care?

    http://www.autoblog.com/2010/07/13/b...greement-abou/

If you were one of the 30 Bimmerphiles to snag a 2011 Frozen Gray M3 Coupe last month, expect to fill out another round of paperwork before you take delivery of your new matte gray baby.

BMW is apparently requiring all owners to sign a "maintenance agreement" that insists the M3 is never polished or waxed, ran through an automatic car wash or even strongly rubbed. Additionally, BMW politely asks that you immediately remove bugs, bird droppings, tree sap and fuel spills with a soft sponge, and naturally, dealers are more than willing to sell you appropriate products for maintaining the matte finish.

According to enthusiast site Bimmerfest, BMW explicitly states the M3's warranty won't cover any damage due to owner neglect and it notes that all exterior repairs must be performed by a BMW-authorized shop. What's more, if you don't sign the agreement, no Frozen Grey M3 for you. That's a lot of disclaimers. All of which could be easily solved for less if you simply went down to your local custom vinyl shop and wrapped your (decidedly less expensive) standard M3 in a 3M coating. But how do you put a price on exclusivity?

Maybe it is that angle, but that does nothing for me. I would stick to matte white/black vinyl wrap. When you get bored of it you can simply remove it to reveal your pristine paint that was beneath it.

The car looks unreal in person. There are 2 available in Calgary. It's well
worth the extra care required to maintain.

Have fun going on any kind of roadtrip...

I'd much prefer buying a regular M3 and vinyl wrap it like previously mentioned.

I disagree with both you and Beyond Ban. I really like the new look of the 3 series (coupe especially), and think it looks way better than the 2005+ models.

I think it looks quite good. I thought all of the frozen gray m3s had the competition package though? ^^

I think it's sexy. But wraps is cheaper and has added protection.

And I'm sure this is one last ditch effort to keep it interesting before the new 3 shows up next year.

Don't get me wrong, i LOVE E9X m3's, i was more so referring to the color. The one pictured by redlyne looks much much nicer. The sheen looks good on it. I would still prefer a vinyl wrap though.

Redlyne_mr2 - that photo makes the paint look wicked. The first photo looks like my cars 8 yr old paint that hasn't been washed in a month; there's no depth to it. Maybe it's because of the natural light but it just doesn't pop like the photo inside the dealership.

Oh and I agree that it probably is worth the extra maintenance for the exclusivity, but the cost effective side of me would take it and get it vinyl wrapped instead.

So does that mean that BMW doesnt trust the paint to last?

And your Aveo is definitely one of the hottest looking cars on the road.... FAIL

Ill have to admit, I did my 3 series in matte black vinyl and it was definitely way less than painting the parts I had done. Frozen Gray though could be sick, I'll have to see it in person.

Under normal circumstances yes. While it looks very nice it's not really practical as a proper automobile finish. BMW's contract is essentially absolving any responsibility of the durability of the finish. As a daily driver it's going to be a nightmare to maintain. However for a weekend car you should be able to maintain it if you adhere to the strict upkeep.
