You're right that it has to be gif or png.

It is showing a white background when you view it in the browser? Keep in mind that not all programs (preview programs, etc) will view the transparency properly. They may put it on a white background for viewing purposes. But a browser should be showing it properly.

If it is showing up as white background in a browser, then you made the file wrong. Are you sure you saved transparency? Are you sure that the actual background layer is blank, as opposed to white?

Feel free to send the two (one gif, one png) files to [email protected], and I can tell you what is wrong.

As mentioned via email, your images are fine. It is likely the inability of your computer/software to properly preview the image. I suppose it could be some sort of coding error, but I doubt it; generally if you coded the image to show up, it would show up properly.

Another thing is, it may depend on your browser. Are you using CSS to layout your website? I've had overlapping divs with pngs, that work fine in opera/firefox etc but in IE, they show with white bg.

Transparency is easy, I'm sure you will figure it out in no time, but test it in IE just to make sure.
