    Default Blackberry Torch and OS6 announced

    This morning Waterloo-based Reasearch In Motion officially announced their latest smartphone – the BlackBerry Torch 9800. This will be the first device that will have their new OS BlackBerry 6. Even though there’s no official Canadian release date there are rumours that this is penciled in to be available later this Summer.

    After months of being leaked and teaser videos RIM has officially released their new redesigned OS called BlackBerry 6. They stated in a press release that “BlackBerry 6 is the outcome of RIM’s ongoing passion to deliver a powerful, simplified and optimized user experience for both touch screen and keyboard fans. Following extensive research and development to address consumer needs and wants, we are delivering a communications, browsing and multimedia experience that we think users will love.”

    As for compatibility it will be “Subject to carrier certifications in the months ahead, the new OS is expected to be available for the BlackBerry Bold 9700, BlackBerry Bold 9650 and BlackBerry Pearl 3G, as well as future BlackBerry smartphones.”

    Anyone looking at getting the new BB?

    Probably won't get the new BB, but I'm crossing my fingers that Rogers releases OS 6.0 for my 9700.

    Pretty sure they will because they arent going to release a new os and leave the older berries hanging.

    I wish they had an OS 6 planned for the 9000. Or something like the 9700 with the 9000 form-factor. (No, I'll never let it go.)

    RIM's already said they'll be providing the OS 6.0 update for the 9700, but it's a matter of Rogers allowing it through, which I'm extremely doubtful of, but hopefully they will.

    My Bold's only 6 months old, I don't want it to be running on outdated software.

    haven't really looked into this, but why wouldn't Rogers allow OS 6.0?

    if its release to the 9700 can't we install it like any other OS version?

    You guys do know that once a release is made for BB 6 (and yes its called Blackbery 6, not OS6) its very easy to update your device regardless of carrier.

    So i wouldn't worry too much about what rogers does, and does not do.

    ^ I was hoping that'd be the case, but this line in the press release has me a bit worried:
    Subject to carrier certifications in the months ahead, the new OS is expected to be available for the BlackBerry® Bold™ 9700, BlackBerry® Bold™ 9650 and BlackBerry® Pearl™ 3G, as well as future BlackBerry smartphones.

    Installing another carrier's OS onto your BB involves deleting one file (the one that tells it what carrier it's for), then installing it

    Just delete the vendor.xml file on your PC and you can install any carrier's OS you want.

    I think I am running a Wind Hellas certified OS (Greece) on my Rogers Bold 9000.

    There are also hybrid OS's out there as well that combine certain parts of different OS's.

    http://forums.crackberry.com/f95/

    I'm tempted to try one of those on my 9000.

    Got my 9700 early November.. Will likely just get the OS upgrade unless the torch offers something spectacular, which I doubt.

    right now for my 9700 im running
    BlackBerry Handheld Software v5.0.0.1254 (EastAsia and English)

    Package Version: 5.0.0.1254
    Consisting of:

    * Applications: 5.0.0.743
    * Software Platform: 5.1.0.165

    going to try the hybrid version

    This is for 9700 5.0.0.743 base (Havent fully tested with .862)

    Includes 794/832/5.2/6.0.0.31/.91/.100/.135 Files

    so sick of the official version constantly freezing, the only thing i like about the os is how fast it brings up my photos now when changing my bbm picture.
