    Each insurance company is different.

For instance, mine allows 14 days from date of purchase, BUT they only offer coverage eual to the loswest level of insurance on your policy.

ie, if you have 2 cars, one fully covered, one just liability, my insurance would offer only liability on the newly purchased vehicle.

In my case, I have 5 vehicles, two of which only have "parking insurance", so if I bought a new vehicle, this is all the protection they would automatically give, meaning I could NOT drive it (since no liability).... fucked, but true story lol

10 year bump to see if this has changed.

My mom just purchased a new vehicle that she's picking up tomorrow. However her auto insurance is through a broker that is closed until Jan 4th and the insurance company said they can't add a new vehicle as it has to go through the brokerage firm.

Looking at this thread, she can just use the license plate from current/old vehicle, and as soon as her broker is back to work she can update the policy and go register for a new plate. Is this still accurate for 2020?

    TIA!

If you don't want to get insurance for whatever reason, just pay for it full, ask the dealer to drive it to your home (with dealer plate, most dealers offer home delivery service now) or have them to trailer to your home, only couple hundred buck, have done it few times.

    G-ZUS is correct, sort of.

There is a clause in the SP#1 (legal framework of a basic auto policy) that applies to newly acquired automobiles. There are a bunch of conditions that must be met in order for the coverage to apply so the OP will want to review the situation with his specific agent but it can be done, legally.

OP, you mentioned that the person you spoke with wasn't much help. Can you ask for a manager or something?

See my post from 2010, if the right things are already in place you can make use of the newly acquired vehicle clause in the SPF 1.

You need VIN# and make and model to get insurance as insurance companies do not care if you already own it or will be soon. In terms of plate transfer you are not quiet correct, here is statement form Alberta Gov Site
    "Existing licence plates

You can use your existing licence plate and vehicle registration on another vehicle for up to 14 days. You must also carry your proof of ownership document and insurance until you transfer the registration and licence plate.

The 14-day period allowed for the transfer of licence plate/registration doesn’t apply to commercial vehicles and insurance documents.

Check with your insurance company or broker for insurance requirements and coverage information."
