    Default cops ticketing cyclists on Bow pathway near Parkdale

    Just flipping through the radio this morning and hearing reports that cops are stopping and ticketing cyclists on the pathway eastbound into downtown.

    Any go by there and get nabbed? or anyone drive by and see whats going on? They said there was a lot of cyclists getting pulled over and that even traffic on the road was slowing down because of people rubber necking.

    Pulled over for what? Maybe its a safety checkstop to make sure your bell works and brakes are within spec

    Speeding, I would assume. I believe the speed limit on bike paths is 20 km/h.

    Definitely speeding. Esp. in the morning. Probably what caused that crash last year under the bridge by the zoo. Saw a dude on memorial this morning that said fuck it and was riding on the street. Was probably doing about 50km/h in a 70 zone. Not bad hehe.

    They had some guys pulled over for no helmet, prob no bell and speeding. Lots of people were just hauling right through as they had like 10 people pulled over.

    You don't need to wear helmets if you're over 18.

    I've got chased by a cop on the bike paths before. I just took off haha.

    The speed limits on the bike paths are ridiculous. There's no way you can get any cardio at those speeds.

    Just leave the bike in first gear. Getting up to 20 kph like that will get your heart going!

    Radio reports that there were up about 6 cops with one on the radar gun and the others handing out tickets to the cue of cyclists that got stopped.

    I thought all cyclists need to wear helmets on the pathway. However, if cyclist ride on the road, they do not need to wear helmets. At least, that's my understanding.

    Cycling is bad for Alberta's economy.

    They want you paying for a car, paying for insurance, paying for parking, paying for gas. + all the taxes that go with that stuff.

    HAHA.

    I just read through the bylawn

    http://www.calgary.ca/DocGallery/BU/...ks/20M2003.pdf

    It would seem the only thing that you're legally allowed to do in a park is to sit still and be quiet.

    I love the fact that we live in a society that over the last 40 years, a person's perceptions of "laws" has changed to

    "Are we allowed to do this here?"

    from

    "why wouldn't be we be allowed to do this here?"

    21. No Person, while in a Park, shall:
    (a) swing a golf club;
    (b) propel a golf ball or plastic golf ball of any kind in any manner;
    (c) engage in any form of archery;
    (d) play lawn darts, horseshoes or disc golf;
    (e) operate an amplification system;
    (f) do anything which is likely to attract a crowd;
    (g) take part in any procession, drill, performance, ceremony, concert or public
    gathering; or
    (h) ride downhill on a toboggan, sleigh, carpet or other sliding device;
    except in an area where such activity is specifically allowed by the Director.

    22. No Person shall play hockey, whether on skates or not, or bring hockey sticks or pucks
    onto any:
    (a) tennis court controlled by The City;
    (b) Park Roadway; or
    (c) on any of the following skating rinks:
    (i) Olympic Plaza;
    (ii) Prairie Winds Park;
    (iii) Bowness Park;
    (iv) Marlborough Park; or
    (v) Prince’s Island Lagoon.

    That bell rules is BS also, most people now have ipods on and cant here them anyway... so what is the point of that???

    I had to drive today so i did not ride but there was about 8 cops one with a radar gun just east of crow and memorial on the path way, they had about 4 people pulled over...

    i normally go through there at about 40km/hr...

    Police are DESPERATE to get as much revenue as possible these days. People really can't speed much anymore due to traffic volumes in this city, so they need to supplement with other 'violations'.

    That's why we're seeing so many tint/exhaust/seatbelt/bike path/reflectors-on-motorcycle tickets ect ect.. Police need revenue.

    I have 2 friends who recently left the police force because they realized all they were doing was gittin' money. Major crimes took a backseat until the media got a hold of it. If there was major media focus on something they'd be able to work on it... The rest of the time, go get money.

    How are you supposed to know how fast you're going on your bike?

    That is just a straight up asshole move.

    Perhaps people who were walking or runners complained... there is also a construction zone down there where cyclists are supposed to dismount to cross it, not sure if most do.

    Wish they would crack down and ticket the bike couriers downtown-they are the dangerous ones.
