Lightbulb Can anyone tell me about the 1991 BMW 318is?

Im 17, from edmonton alberta, and ill be getting my license in about a weeks time. im currently looking for a car. originally i had my eyes on a 2006 VW Jetta TDI, i liked the looks, fuel economy, diesel reliability and german quality. however, the 10-14k price tag is quite a bit for a first car...

i was just randomly surfing ebay one day when my eyes chanced upon a red 1991 BMW 318is. i absolutely fell in love with the classic euro styling (i have a thing for that look). looking around i see good reviews, although most say its hard to maintain (being a 20 year old car im not suprised)

Ive found a few really nice specimens in great condition for 4-6k CAD. (with around 160-200k km) the price floors me.

the only thing that worries me about this car is the fact that i live in edmonton and we get some intense winters... it seems a bit low for snowy roads... anyone know how it will fair?

really im wondering what you more experienced drivers think of this car. and if you have any other suggestions of autos i should look at please let me know.

(heres the two listings that perked my interest the most):

I wouldn't say they are super low, average maybe. Good winter tires and you shouldn't have too many problems in the winter.

I had the 318i for my first car, I never had any real issues other than the fuel pump needed to be replaced in the 2 years I owned it. It was really light on the back end, and was terrible in the winters, and lacked cup holders. If you were getting this vehicle, I'd recommend the 325, cause the 318 was a little slow.

During the winter, with michelin x-ice's on all 4's. I lived on a big hill and got about half way up before losing traction and having to park it on the side and walk the rest of the way home. But I loved that car, the e30's are my favourite bmw's to this day. I would love to own an e30 m3.

I used to own an 89 325i and I loved it and miss it to this day. Maintenance can get a little expensive on them but they drive awesome and are fairly quick.

So im getting that the "e30" was a chassis that BMW's were based on before 1991?

other then the engine, is there any other differences between models of the 3-series?

i genuinely almost sprung a tear... then i scrolled down.

    haha.

im having a really hard time finding a nice 325. the only colors im liking are red and black, and it seems most of the ones in good condition have been lowered or "pimped out" in pretty stupid-ugly ways. if anyone sees a good one for sale be so kind as to mention it!

Everyone and their mum seems to be getting E30's for project cars on the side. Especially on e46fanatics and other bmw forums. Every week there seems to be a "I just bought an E30 for a project!!!!!111"

    So they're getting rare?
