    Default PS3 hack?

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-11035928

Did a search found nothing. Not sure if it's real.
Gonna be big news in the game world if it works!

The PS3 is the only games console that has not been hacked, despite being on the market for more than three years.

Now a group called PSJailbreak says it will release a USB dongle containing software that allows users to save games to the console's hard drive.

Sony, the maker of the PS3, declined to comment.

PSJailbreak has also not responded to interview requests by BBC News.

However, a distributor for the dongle said that he had tested it and would start selling the device "in the next two weeks".

"We are in contact with a person in Malaysia but don't know where the manufacturer is," he told the BBC.
    Mixed response

According to videos of the hack posted online by an Australian distributor, a user merely has to insert the USB stick into the console to make it work.

The videos show a person navigating to a "backup manager" on the PS3, which purports to show a list of games saved to the console's hard drive.

The narrator flicks through the list before loading one of the games.

Sceptics have suggested the videos are a hoax or that they show the hack running on a so-called "debug PS3", used by developers to test code for the machine.
Girl playing on a Nintendo DS Lite Handheld computer games Nintendo has won various rulings agsinst modchip distributors

However, a spokesperson for Fox-Chip, another distributor based in France, denied this was the case.

"It works on all PlayStation 3s," he told BBC News. "We tested it yesterday."

He said the hack was a "good thing" as it would give gamers more functionality, including the ability to run their own games, called homebrews.

"There was previously no homebrew, because it was impossible to execute [on the console] - now some people can do it," he said.

He denied that the product would just be used to pirate games and said in the long run, its release would be good for Sony.

"Sony should sell a lot of consoles because of this," he said.

But Rik Ferguson of security firm Trend Micro warned that the hack could cause problems.

"It does disable some key security features built into the PS3 - like the running of unsigned code - and we've seen with the iPhone that this makes your device less secure."

The iPhone has been cracked several times and allows owners to run non-Apple approved applications.

Gamers have met the news of PSJailbreak with a mixed response, with some welcoming the possibility of developing their own games for the popular console.

However, many posting on PS3 forums said that the product would promote piracy and could undermine the game's industry.
    Pre-emptive strike

The legality of products such as this - commonly called modchips - differs by country.

The Fox-chip spokesperson said that distributing them was legal in France.

However, in other countries, console manufactures have successfully taken distributors to court.

A recent High Court ruling in the UK said that "game copiers" were illegal to import, advertise and sell.

The case had been brought by Nintendo, maker of the Wii and DS handheld console.

The defendants had argued that they allow gamers to play home-made games.

PSJailbreak is not the first time that there have been claims that the popular PS3, which has sold almost 40 million units, has been hacked.

Earlier this year, a US hacker who gained notoriety for unlocking Apple's iPhone as a teenager, George Hotz, claimed to have cracked the console.

Following his initial announcement, Sony released an update for the console disabling a function that allowed gamers to install a version of Linux on their machines, thought to have exploited by Mr Hotz.

Many saw it as a pre-emptive strike to guard against games piracy.

Mr Hotz has never released the exploit and has said publicly that he has given up his work on the console.

Mr Ferguson said he expected a similarly swift response to the latest exploit:

"It will be patched up very quickly," he said.

It would be nice if we could finally get mkv support although that's not what the article is talking about. I would love to be able to run xbmc on the darn thing. I guess we'll see in a few weeks how legit this hack is, as its not the first time we've heard such promises. According to the other link posted doesnt look like you need anything fancy, just a usb key with some software. In either case if this holds to be true I dont think I will be an early adopter considering it cant be uninstalled. Ill keep an eye on this in the future to see how this affects people using the playstation network.

Im assuming your talking about ps3 media server. I tried it on wireless and its unwatchable but that's because the ps3 ships with wireless g. I havnt tried to play anything through a wired connection. It would be nice to be able to play mkv's without any transcoding. Its certainly wouldnt be hard for sony to implement in a firmware upgrade, but being as x264 is used widely for pirate bluray rips it makes sense that this is something they decided to leave out.

Does anyone know the size of an average ps3 game? I was under the impression part of the reason there were'nt any hacks for the ps3 is because the games were large and required to be burned to bd-r discs in order to be played.

    Default PS3 hack?

I was just checking up on our PS JailBreak pre-order status (from OzModChips) and unfortunately their first shipment has been delayed. I quote:

Stock Status: Preorders welcome, (stock delayed a little, eta it not known 100% but it could be around the 3rd of September) Our store will be closed on the day we get stock, and the phone lines will be of to that we can process all orders as fast as we can.

Many blu-ray movies are encoded in H264 format on the disc itself. The PS3 fully supports H264 content. The reason you must transcode the video is that the MKV container format is not supported.

Also, x264 is the name of an encoder that encodes H264 video.

And finally, even if the PS3 could play your MKV files natively, you won't magically gain the wireless bandwidth you need for smooth playback.

Im well aware of some of those points. I was just saying it would be nice if they had mkv support. The front end for browsing movies is also kind of sparse, it gets the job done but for large media collections browsing movies using a folder structure isnt practical.

got my device yesterday and spent a while tonight fiddling with it.
I got the minimus avr (made by team xecuter, same company I've relied on for mods since the xbox).
Works as advertised, once you figure out the software. Copied my GT5 Prologue to the hdd- loads faster (of course) and works well...tried to copy 'MLB The Show 10' and got a write error at about 90% (after about an hour of copying) so that one didn't work...
best thing so far- Snes 9X Super NES emulator-first 'homebrew' I've tried.

you can do that without jailbreaking- everything backup-and-restore related is built right into the system menu...and in the manual

the first thing I did to my 40gb was put in a 250 gig hdd.

I downloaded a couple to test rather than ripping the discs (Fight Night Round 4 and Burnout Paradise). Both work perfectly fine.
I can't get the 'no disc' setup to work- right now I need to have an original (any game) in the drive to load up one of the rips- not really a big deal, but it would be nice to get past that. When you load a rip, it goes back to the main menu and the loaded game shows up where the game in the disc drive should be- even changes the background and all that like the original does.

btw, these have all been run off of an external drive. When I tried to rip MLB 10 it went straight to the internal. GT5 prologue went to the external. I didn't see anywhere to choose which drive they were ripped to, but I may have just missed that.
