Unhappy Pontiac Wave 2006 No Power

I have a 2006 Pontiac Wave for the last year the check engine light has been on or was flashing. Over the year I have had no problems at all with this car. Recently on my way home from work I was doing about 80 KM I hit the gas to keep up the speed and there was nothing at all the car slowed down to about 40 km and I did this speed all the way the shop(GM). A day later they (GM) said U will need $2000.00 to fix the car. They said it needed a catalytic converter, purge solenoid change the spark plugs and wires, and I also needed a throttle body kit.
Ok I took the car home and considered burning it. Seems I found out later if I turn the car on and off the no power thing goes away for a short time. I changed the plugs and the wires and the (I am not sure of the name of the device is on the older cars it was a distributor cap this car has an I think it’s called an ingnition coil). Well after all the parts I have replaced on the car it still spits and sputters when driving and whenever it wants too it just loses power until I put the car in neutral and turn the car off and take the key out and restart the car sometimes I have to do this 2 or 3 times to get the power back.
I have not done the catalytic converter yet($800 later) but at this point I have no idea what’s wrong with this car.

    Problems..
#1 Car sputters when driving anytime of the day.
#2 Car just loses power and will only do 40 km
    Help……

Go to autovalue and have them read the codes your car is throwing, they do this for free. Then using those codes, you can find out what your car is saying the problem is, and it will help you pin point the actual problem.

    wow that was helpful..
This is whats called second opinion..

When it comes to GM i have my disbelieve about them
This is the same company that wanted to charge me to change the plugs and chanrge me separate to change the wires.

I guess my point was you had a shop tell you what's wrong but didn't bother doing it and yet you wonder what is wrong.

Why would anyone else telling you something get any better result?

Either fix what they said it needs or, if you don't trust them, get a second opinion. If their opinions match then.....you can do the math on that one. If they don't then you're still one step closer to figuring it out.

    oh.....nice ninja edit.

You're right. That wasn't very accurate at all.

It's a Pontiac *WAVE*... which is why there is no power.

Seriously OP: If your cat is clogged up, it will TOTALLY rob power. An easier (yet temporary) way to find out is to disconnect it, and leave the pipe open and drive the car. It will sound like shit, but if you notice the power back to normal, you know what your problem is.

But first, check the codes as suggested. Even econboxes are equipped with rather intelligent computers which can often show you what the issue is. If you do not have a scanner, or know someone who does, then Autovalue will check the codes for you for free.

haha nope. However you guys already provided good start up suggestions so I figured I could be an ass and not take the integrity away from the thread.

Correction - it's a Daewoo sold by pontiac - You wanna talk POS?

It's not the cat - if it was - you'd be gutless as sh*t 24/7 - it's going into limp mode for some reason - 99% it's electrical or sensor. But you'll have to get the codes to figure out which.
