Some Asians don't like being exposed to direct sunlight... they had their hats turned to keep the sun off their necks, I would assume.

There's a few around here in Sandstone that wear these gigantic 'welding shields' when they go for a walk... looks hilarious!

My understanding is that in some Asian communities (not sure which) having dark/tanned skin means you're more of a peasant (outdoors in the sun all the time) and it is more favorable to have light skin.

Correct me if I'm wrong... but I've heard that a few times in my life.

That's BS...I'm Canadian Born Chinese and I grew up in Vancouver where there are A LOT of Hong Kong immigrants so I know my culture. The fact is that a lot of Chinese people (mainly the really traditional types which most immigrants are) are just plain fucking racist against anyone dark skinned. You should hear the things they say about Filipinos, who tend to be darker skinned. They look down on East Indians, blacks, Lebanese, etc, you name it....It's seen in traditional Chinese culture as beautiful to be pale skinned, that's why you always see Asian women walking around with umbrellas when it's sunny outside and also a lot of non-white-washed asian girls are pale as fuck. Of course with any ethnic group really in Canada, it's mainly the parents that think this way, most of their kids have a bit more sense.

Think of it more like, when your driving and sun comes up over the horizon and shines in your face at the corner of your eye, or at the right top. Either way, your putting on sunglasses, or pulling the sun visor down in your car and adjusting it to block the sun.
The hats... Just blocking the sun.

100% the truth in SE asia where there are different cultures living in the one country, its a big problem in M'sia

darker skin meaning poorer because darker means you're outside working the fields (farmers, labourers etc)
