Because they can....the Corvette started it in 1953 with their new sports car, but was only available with the auto powerglide.. then there was the Sunbeam auto in the early 60's, then later the Fiat Spider had one too. The old classic sports cars are all but gone and now every 2 door coupe is a sports car and come with autos or standards...
It used to be that the standards were faster and more efficient, but nowdays with the improvements to the autos, they're the better..
Lastly, maybe you shouldn't concider the 3 series a real sports car..
While looking at Mustangs I notice most of them are sticks.
