    Default September 24, 2010 mayoral candidate's poll

Per ZeeZee's suggestion from the Calgary 2010 mayoralty race thread, a new mayoral candidate's poll.

Have included only 9 of the more recognizable names and the rest are lumped together (arranged alphabetically by last name) and the poll is only open for 14 days.

Nenshi right now but am looking a little bit at Stewart.

Definitely a no go on Hawkesworth, Higgins and McIver.

One thing to be considered in this poll is the demographics of beyond members - younger in age, but if Nenshi's campaign can get this demographic actually out to the polls, then an upset could be in the works.

And BTW, I am most likely on the upper extreme (down hill side???) of the bell curve when it comes to beyond age demographics.

I like Rick Mciver, because when I say his name aloud, it sounds like MacGyver

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

Gotta be Nenshi. Guy's got the best platform by a long shot.

    Ric McIver:

Votes for the $3 park & ride fee - now claims he wants to scrap it

Calls auditor Tracey McTaggart a "rock star" then a week later votes to fire her.

Votes to pre-approve police budget with zero scrutiny, yet still claims he's a fiscal conservative supporting a zero-based budgeting. can't be both.

Does the development industry's bidding by voting to gut Plan-It in a last minute behind-closed-doors deal reducing minimum density requirements.

Haven't decided yet, but I'm thinking about Burrows.

Burrows is an interesting choice. I like his passion and his smart card/transit ideas. I also find it entertaining when he attacks McIver at the forums.

Stewart is interesting too. It is pretty evident that he cares a lot about the city and seems like a really good guy. But I think overall he's pretty terrible at getting his message across. Particularly at the forums.

^ Well I don't like McIver all that much anyway!

No but seriously...I like the ideas Burrows has about transit, and the whole smart card thing. Plus he's for the airport tunnel, and getting it built right away, not spending 3 years waiting for the province to promise money while the airport goes ahead and builds the runway. He's also committed to putting more cops on the street, and extending the LRT to the airport.

I do like the smart card idea (it was in the works for transit anyway, but Burrows is proposing it for more city services), but the prioritization of airport LRT is a terrible idea.

^ Well its not a top priority, as far as I can tell. He said 2015, so we can add maybe 2-3 years to that for realism. I think LRT expansion-wise, they need to work on Downtown first, then the west and airport lines.

^Yes, he wants to make it a top priority, at the expense of SE LRT. This despite the fact that the SE line's ridership would dwarf that of the airport line, both in absolute terms and ridership per dollar spent.

Also, he's been unresponsive when questioned whether he would get the airport authority to pay for it (like Vancouver's did).

It's been interesting to watch how the poll has evolved. Higgins' support has evaporated and Nenshi has surged. It's interesting to see that this was the same patteron on Calgarypuck.com's poll.

Right after Barb declared, she had huge support on there. Now, it's gone way down.

I know this is the internets machine, but I wonder if this pattern will follow with the general public.

Poll was done by Leger Marketing for CTV Calgary and The Calgary Herald. Too bad demographic numbers weren't included in the story.

Barb just fired her campaign manager.

That just screams "You didn't pick out the red M&M's, you're gone" to me. Which is a bad thing.
