start off by checking your spark plugs and plug wires
Common problem, as 4G said start by checking the plugs.

dead plugs? it COULD be a spark problem.
Check intake filter if it is dirty also, this can cause problems similar.

injectors maybe?
I would do a full tune up plugs wires cap, roter, fuel and air filter.
Also check the transmission fluid, make sure its nice and pink, ive known a few guys witch had there transmissions blow with the early taurus autos.
in the end it could be anything.
mass air sensor
oxygen sensor
fuel pump
ect
Another thing to check, probably before the MAF and O2 sensors, is the idle air control valve, EGR spacer, and throttle body. You can get some nasty buildup in this area on older motors. A can of carb cleaner can make a big difference.
