VANCOUVER — North Vancouver police have impounded a pair of hot wheels — a BMW and a $400,000 Ferrari — last weekend when officers pulled over two drivers clocked at about 200 km/h.

The Vancouver men, 21 and 22, were stopped by North Vancouver RCMP Saturday when officers spotted them racing on a road popular among hikers, outdoor enthusiasts and families.

Several motorists called in a dangerous driving complaints at 10:45 a.m. Moments later, the officer was stunned to see a sky blue Ferrari Scuderia streak past him, pursued closely by a BMW.

They were forced to slow down as they approached a parking lot, allowing police to catch up.

"They were penalized under the street-racing laws," said Cpl. Peter DeVries, spokesman for the detachment. "I think we probably saved their lives, if nothing else."

Both men were handed close to $1,000 in fines and automatically lost their licences and vehicles for seven days. The man driving the Ferrari had been behind the wheel of the supercar — valued at $400,000 — for only a day before watching it loaded onto the back of the impound truck.

So they never get their car back? They probably will face fines and will be good to go... $1,000 ticket and a 7 day suspension not bad especially if the guy has a $400,000 vehicle. it will seem like a car wash for his car

How is that considered punishment? These "kids" will just laugh it off. Its like an average 21yr old in his $4,000 civic, getting fined $10 and a time out. Lesson not learned. I though BC fines were ridiculous. Maybe it meant to say $10,000

this. I could see if it was part of that 'seize and crush' street racing punishment- taking them for a week is no biggie.

Articles like this need to name names, useless without the social stigma Abbot and Costello would face had their names been released to the public. I am hoping the secured impound lot has a key or two they can run down the side of these cars, a treat to do it myself. Last car I had towed for a parking violation in Calgary, both of my mirrors were damaged, replacement was $500 out of my pocket.

sweet looking car but 200kph on a "popular" road should get more than a 1000$ fine.

obviously if he can afford a 400k car he can afford a lawyer to get him the car back, they cant destroy the car or impound it forever....

The article is so full of crap. But I guess that's usual for a non-story

    - The speeds were never clocked, only estimated by other civilian motorists.

    - The car is an 08 Scuderia. Maybe, with the right options, and ALL taxes, it could've been $400k when new. However, this car was recently bought used for significantly less.

    - The owner has had the car for longer than 1 day. Not a lot longer, but hey, saying "one day" sure makes it a better story, right?

    - He'll get the car back, but it's unlikely he'll be keeping it due to the insane ICBC insurance he'll be looking at.

I cannot stand idiots like this and in no way condone these speeds on public roads. I believe the driver should be fined significantly more and lose his license for a while.

I also cannot stand out right lying in "news" stories where the author (don't care to call him a journalist) is too lazy to do any fact checking and just embellishes minor details to make his non-story remotely interesting.
