Default GM Synchromesh in Honda Trans.

Lots of different opinions about this one. Wondering if anyone has any experience with it in thier Honda. Any difference or preference between non-FM and FM fluids (Friction modified)?

Used it on a couple of B-series transmissions and it worked just fine. No problem with mad 5-3 VTEC shifts.

I've used it in my Civic's b18b tranny before and it seemed to work fine. It's just your typical synthetic tranny fluid, that's all. I bought mine a few years ago at Auto Value. Not sure if they still carry it, but you could always give them a call first.

It's not the size that matters, it's the taste it leaves in your mouth.

Or you can use Redlines full synthetic version, MTL or MT90

I have noticed a difference in all transmissions I have used it in. I posted a thread on here last week about it being on sale @ CMP for $5.88/ litre. AutoValue was selling it for $12/litre lol. Not sure if it still is on sale.

GM sycromesh is bad for the brass syncros in Honda transmissions I've heard.

Redline Shockproof light worked wonders on my Mr2 transmission (full fluid change, not just an additive)

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

Well I threw in the synchromesh (non-FM) last night and noticed a difference! particularily on gearing down and just over all smoothness in the shifter.
Many reviews I read, said that the real benefits didnt start appearing untill after about 1000 km's break in on the fluid.

The stuff is made by penzoil/texaco for GM and is sold under several names. Penzoil synchromesh, GM synchromesh, ACDelco Synchromesh ect....

A couple observations from the change:

-The Synchromesh fluid is slightly more viscous than honda MTF
-Also noticed that when over fill dripped into my drain pan with old MTF in it, it would bead and skip off for a moment on the surface of the honda MTF (Intense frictional properties?)
-Synchromesh created a layer on top of honda MTF ( = less dense)

Of course you are gonna notice a difference, regardless of what fluid you put in.

I used gm synchromesh in my S2000. The first few thousand clicks everything was great, then it degraded and got very notchy quickly after that. Honda MTF works much better for me, but I will try a Redline or Amsoil product next.

My old fluid was honda MTF with 500 km on it.

Are you sayin the GM degraded fast for you?

It's very slippery stuff and contains no additives for the synchros...

I used GM Syncromesh in the 6-Speed Legend and it worked very well, much better shifting in regards to smoothness.

Hard to say though, as others mentioned, as any change in fluid is going to be a noticed improvement.

I will be trying Amsoil Synchromesh transmission fluid in my Honda next week. It says specifically in the description that it is compatible with brass synchros and replaces Honda genuine MTF. Hopefully it works well for me.

    Yup, great stuff as well.

Cant go wrong with anything meant for that trans from Redline, Amsoi, Royal Purple etc.

People that report "miraculous" differences with an oil swap either had the wrong fluid in it (ie, no additives for the synchros), or the fluid was REALLY old.

Maybe not, but my 2/3rd synchros went from grinding every 2-3 shifts to grinding 1 in 30. Most gen2 MR2 guys swear by this stuff (not that I'm saying it'll be great for a Honda, but it's awesome for us)

edit: and yes I know it's a band-aid, I'm rebuilding the tranny this winter

The GM/AC Delco/Penzoil synchromesh product info also specifies good yellow metal and synchro compatibility fyi.

We use to put that stuff in the DSM's to help with the second gear syncro crunch. Never helped my POS DSM though...but a buddy of mine swore by it, and when a shop fucked up and put normal fluid in his trans his 2nd crunched until he put the GM stuff back in and it stoped crunching so who knows
