Default Airdrie Municipal Election - Oct 18th '10

I know beyond is mostly Calgary based, but I know we have some Airdrie people on here, so we should have an election thread too.

Even if nobody responds I'll continue to update this thread for anyone observing it.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

The municipal election is on the 18th of October, lots of candidates this time, if you can’t tell from all the signs. The election is different then Calgary since there are no wards, you choose six city aldermen and one mayor when you vote, you are not required vote for multiple aldermen, you can pick anywhere from one to a maximum of six, so you can simply vote for single person if you like (which would still only equal one vote).

Since Airdrie has doubled in population in about 10 years, I'll provide some history on them too.

    So who are the candidates?

I find it so much easier to follow the Calgary election over Airdrie (where I live). I find it difficult to see the differences these people make in a smaller city. Im will have to put some time in over the next week to get to know the candidates a bit better.

Good thread, thanks very much for this.

Saves me a ton of time finding all that info, and those sites myself.

I may find it hard voting for anyone who has lived in A-town for less than 10 years though. I've been here for all 28 of my years, and I would love to see someone voted in who was here before the boom.

Does anyone know who voted for the Monklands development, I want to make sure I don't vote for them. I know the mayor did but who else?

Voted- glad to see the change.

I had a hard time voting for Alderman as there was so much information i ended up voting for 4 (your mother included). I specifically didnt vote for Belyk.

I'm happy about the Airdrie results... not so much about Calgary.

Just seems as though the Nenshi vote was the 'cool' thing to do, and not necessarily the 'right' thing to do.

I don't mind the guy at all, but so much hype for a guy who has never been in a role like this before... seems strange he got so many votes. It's the hype machine. And it will come back to bite Calgary in the arse.

Linda Bruce comment re: Peter Brown.

"I have lots of experience working with Peter (Brown) and, no, I don't believe he'll do well as mayor," she said.

Pretty lame comment IMO. Maybe next time she will put some effort into her campaign and not assume she has it locked up. That was my impression anyways.

No problem she seems very qualified and i did my research she seemed like a good fit. I would really like to get more involved in local politics so maybe I will need to attend my first counsel meeting in the near future.

Thanks again for your post it was by far the best source of all the information I could find in one spot.
