Default Next mayor of Calgary, Final vote.

Alright, so it's late in the race, Monday is D-Day, all the information to be had pretty much has been had.... Let's see where things stand from Beyond's perspective.

(i only put the top 3 + the "others" because honestly, only the winner matters, and if you're not the top 3, you're not going to win. If you vote for anybody other than the 3, you're wasting your time.)

Shouldn't surprise anyone, but my vote is definitely with Nenshi.

The guy has proven himself to be the most capable of taking on the challenges facing City Hall. Knows what the right questions are to ask and has the leadership qualities Calgary desperately needs in the mayor's chair.

I think it really says something when the two other candidate's support peaks at the start of the campaign and declines as the campaign goes further. That says that people know your name - someone going from nothing to 8% to 20% to 30% in a matter of weeks means that people actually are paying attention and like you and your ideas.

    The choice is clear.

For those perhaps looking for platform info from Nenshi, here's new videos on most of his "Better Ideas"

    First - Key Platform Themes:

#1 – Nenshi proposes common-sense policy on secondary suites

Dr. No wants us to believe he's going to do things differently than his voting record indicates. Barb wants to get about a dozen comitties toghther to "study' each issue. Only guy with a believable plan is Nenshi.

Nenshi will win on the online forums all day long based on how he markets himself and his campaign. It's the 40+ crowd that he's going to have a tough time with.

Yeah, I think Nenshi will be like Ron Paul in the US... cleaned house online, but when it came to paper votes... not so good.

I agree, however i think beyond's demographic is aging, and so there are a few in here that would meet your 40+ crowd.

I hope the "40+ crowd" open their eyes and vote with some real information and consistency instead of just name recognition.

Then as they ponder the thousands of dollars a year they are paying they catch a glimpse on TV of Bronco building a 25 million dollar replica of a veiny red penis across the Bow river...

See, my theory is that although Nenshi has lots of great ideas... but I don't think most people are overly thrilled about the inevitable 20% tax hike that will come if he actually follows through on his massive sweeping reforms.
stupid high tax hikes are inevitable regardless of who gets in that seat, the only difference is nenshi is telling the truth instead of hiding it in "garbage pickup fees" and "admin fees"

He's advocating zero based budgeting, which should force the various departments to find innovative ways to save a couple bucks.
Not saying there won't be an increase, just saying that it'll be smaller, and more transparent than you think.

I am really quite torn right now. I entered the campaign voting for McIver, now its a choice between Nenshi and McIver. There are good points being made by the policies of each party but my main concern is with Nenshi's lack of experience and how he plans to implement some of his broader reforms.

@Sugarphreak, little know fact about the fingertrap bridge. The City of Calgary is actually only paying $125,000 of the total cost, the province is covering the rest.

not quite true... the province's share was basically a gift of cash for the city to use as it sees fit, so although the cash is coming from the province, it could have been used in much better ways.

Funny thing is that Winnipeg got a bridge made by the same guy a few years back, and it is 100x nicer.

I am in the air on who i will vote for still though, Nenshi or McIver... However, i think regardless, McIver will take the chair due to 40+ as previously stated. They are the ones who are more likely to vote too, and theres more of them than there are on message boards and in school.

Best of luck to both. I dont think either will do a bad job to be honest though.

Couldn't the city have used that money for whatever they wanted?

With our abysmal road quality, abysmal infrastructure, abysmal transit system, etc. you would think they could find something better to spend the money on. Just my opinion, of course.

That bridge pissed me off and I don't even follow politics very closely at all.
