Red Deer And Edmonton are 11 and 13th? And Calgary is 55th? Never really felt much safer here than either of those cities.
Winnipeg should be higher on the list too, a true shithole imo. Parts of Vancouver definitely pretty fucked up too. Fort Mac pretty fucked up too, but who really wants to go there anyway?

That is kind of misleading; vehicle theft isn't really "dangerous", it just sucks. I can see a case for "breaking and entering" as there may be a person home, but even then the chance is slim. Any day of the week I'd rather walk through downtown Red Deer alone at night than Winnipeg!

BC is pretty messed up... I lived in surrey... felt like crime central.. the news and radio broadcasts death everyday like its nothing.... and its always gang related with bystanders in the way.. and its fearful to park the car anywhere... every car would have like the club or something.. lol....

The reason Victoria scores so high is kind of an anomaly. "Victoria" is actually just the city center here, home to only 77,000 people. All the surrounding cities (Oak Bay, Saanich, View Royal, Esquimalt, etc) make up the "greater Victoria area." So, what happens is all the bars are downtown, so all the crime migrates to an area with a relatively small resident population. Hence, per capita, the major crime rate seems high. In actuality, it's not if you count the other municipalities as well.

Have you lived in Nanaimo? It has a serious dark side! I saw more violence on a more regular basis at the clubs in the two years I lived there, than I've seen in the 10+ years I've gone to clubs here. Nanaimo has serious Hells Angels influence, as well as some pretty hardcore Asian gang activity. I'm no expert won't claim to be, its just what I saw when I lived there.Originally posted by googe

^ I lived in Nanaimo for 13 years, 2 I served with the local RCMP as an Auxliary constable.
That city is truly something special in a bad way and yes, the HA have a LOT to do with it. There is a reason why it is (was?) the richest/biggest chapter in the west part of Canada and it has a lot to do with the shipping of drugs and the marijuana trade. Even city council and city staff members include(d) loose associations and sympathizers to the HA - this coming from a city whose major looks like Peter Griffin from Family Guy and still lives with his mom.
Nanaimo has turned around the last 5 years though, its far better than it was in the 80s and 90s.
Many people have made links between the Harmac pulp mill pumping out dioxins the last 40 years and changing environmental laws of the last decade improving air quality - to crime - but this is a loose link at best.

Yeah, Nanaimo has a dark side for sure. Take a spin downtown or in the south end, there's all sorts of wonderful people wandering around all over the place... lol...
That's why I moved to Ladysmith... I can enjoy all the creature comforts of a bigger centre (shopping options, etc), but I don't have to deal with all of the crime that comes with it.
