I figured I'd bump this thread to ask a question.

Looking at buying a Browning X-Bolt white gold medallion. It's in .300 Win. Not that I need it, but I figure that I should have a shiny cool looking gun to pass down to the kids that will remind them of how their old man is as tough as nails every time they shoot it I have the idea sold to the wife as a legacy item.

I'd probably only use it for an elk hunt once ever as my other rifles are good enough for any big game in NA and are easier to shoot that an .300 win.

After researching lots on the web, I cant seem to find a comparable to it in terms of just being a quality display item that you "CAN" can go hunt with but will ruin your day if you scratch it. Looking for a competitor with a highly glossed real wood stock, stainless barrel with fluting if possible, fluted bolt would be cool too. I'm a browning fan but not opposed to other brands.

Also a scope recommendation? I prefer Leupold and will probably continue with another VX but will consider other brands (must come in silver to match barrel). What magnification for .300 win? Wouldn't mind if it looked massive with a big bell and long tube. Weight doesn't matter much as its going to live in a gun rack mostly.

Like this but with a bigger/better scope.

So, so cool. Just don't use it for home defense or the perp isn't going to take it seriously as a real gun...

I can’t tell if you are, or not going to be using it for elk? If so, the Z3 at 4x12-50 is probably a good choice

For a scope, nothing wrong with a Leupold at all... I have a VXIII on one of my rifles and it is solid. My favourite so far at a quality for dollar point is my Zeiss Conquest V4. Really comes down to preference though. A scope is very much like a pair of shoes... People eyes are all different.

Man you guys like your expensive scopes.

I was thinking of splurging on a Leupold VX3-HD (<$1000), but will prob stick with a Freedom 4 (<$800).
@SkiBum5.0 if I do use it, it would be for an open area southern AB elk hunt or maybe a sheep hunt (one day). I primarily hunt central AB dense woods and would be really afraid of scratching it.

Yeah I’ve had a Vortex lower end for 4 years and I’m ready to get better glass. I like the Z3 because of the Ballistic Turret mentioned earlier. Takes some of the guesswork out of the longer shots. I’m waiting for scope I want to go on sale, then it should drop under $1g

Leupold VX5HD 3-15x44 is nice if you're woods hunting... 3-4x is perfect for woods and 15x for the open areas. Currently have a 3-15x Vortex Razor LH HD on my Sig cross that you can find for a bit cheaper than the Leupold.

I wonder how much inflation my guns can accumulate waiting for Trudeau to cut me a cheque

I agree, no issues with the Vortex Razor, I have it on a 270 X-Bolt and its never fogged on me. I might not go quite as big as a VX5HD. I may step up the budget up to a VX4HD

Oddly enough while I was getting the gunsmith to check the bore sights on my 270, he mentioned that the used marked is really high on used guns. I could turn a small profit on my 10 year oid 270 and scope combo.

UPDATE: They sold the rife I went to buy a couple days before. So I ordered one. 8-12 months out, but at least nobody else would have touched it with their dirty hands. So I now have 8-12 months to save up for a $2000 scope for my $2000 rifle.

Oh the wife is going to be so mad.

Was at a fundraiser for some wet lands chapter. Ended up bidding on a couple guns in their auction. Ended up with a franchi 6.5 creedmore In camo and some random shot gun.

Didn't really need em but money went to a good causes.
Was super drunk and almost ended up with a hunting trip to Africa. Winning bid was $100 higher then mine. Thankful for that as I really have no Interest going there.
