If you can't hit a gopher at 300 yards with a 22, you should probably lock your guns up and keep them that way.

I couldn’t even see a gopher at that distance with a .22 sized scope. Never mind that a breeze would push the shot 10ft off target. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
You just need a bigger nose, can pick them up with your scent instead of eyesight.
How long does it take to receive a non-restricted PAL? I submitted all the required paperwork about two and half weeks ago. I'm just curious. I probably won't even buy a gun and have no plans on going shooting.
(I thought I needed my PAL to hold on to my father-in-law's two very unsafe-to-use old rifles (haven't been used or taken care of in 25+ years), but I learned in the safety course I only need it to transport them. He has dementia that is progressing and can get angry, so back in May we had a friend, with his PAL, go and get the guns out of the house while my FIL was out. The bolt actions and ammo are hidden somewhere in the garage and only my FIL knows where.)
I heard we are at around 45 days. Once the minimum is over feel free to harass the CFO and CFP office to move the paperwork along. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I would also not advertise that you are in possession of firearms without a valid PAL, I removed that portion from my quote to allow you to revise that post. Not sure what your instructor was smoking. Just my $0.02

If the firing pins are removed you can possess them without pal from my understanding
I’m not aware of any exceptions, that being said I’m not judging, you do you.
I would personally leave them with someone who has a pal.

To clarify, I was never in possession of the guns; my buddy still has them and is just waiting for me to get my PAL.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
My instructor said that anyone can have and even display non-restricted firearms as long as they’re unloaded, locked, and the ammo is stored elsewhere. You just can’t use or transport them without a PAL. Not that it matters at this point for me but I will check the book. Certainly don’t want to spread false information. Maybe he was just thinking of firearms that are inherited as part of an estate but he didn’t make that clear.
Quick question before I jump in and research it myself...am I able to take my restricted handgun to my parent's town (less than 3 hours away) to be used at my Dad's gun club where I am not a member without getting special permission to transport? My range is in YYC. Here's the kicker, they're in BC, I'm in AB. Fully registered firearm, legit gun ranges, legit memberships.

No, you need an ATT or LTATT to legally transport a restricted firearm. If you have an existing LTATT, it depends on the wording but you might be able to with that (some people have them such that they can travel to any range in the province, not sure if you can get them for multiple provinces). This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Obviously it's unlikely you'd get caught either way, but I believe its a Federal offense and not something to take lightly. Just apply for an ATT, in my experience it has been quick & easy - they send it to you electronically.

Thanks. I was googling at the same time, and found the RCMP GRC 54900e form for ATT. I'm not taking any chances and will get the appropriate approvals. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Call the CFO and get a STATT (short term) for the trip to your parents, and another for the trip back.
I recommend calling the CFO first.
Notably if they say no they have to provide the refusal in writing and it can be appealed if you want to play that game.

Good for you guys - asking questions to help do the responsible gun owner things!
I did something like this last year, but to a range in Saskatchewan. I was told I needed a membership at the club, or a written invite to shoot at the out of province club. The out of province range membership was super cheap ($60!) so I did that and they gave me a LTATT. Definitely give the RCMP a call, the lady I dealt with was super nice and helped quite a bit...especially since I waited until the last minuteThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member.
