What methods of self and household protection are most effective at a reasonable cost? No guns and keep things legal and keep costs down at the same time.

BOOOOOya!!!
A set of Chef knives? A Baseball Bat? Tools?
Anything that would be legal to leave laying around is only going to be typical household items in the first place like the kitchen knife.
In Canada, use anything more than your fists, fail to kill the intruder, and you will almost surely get into more trouble than he will. He will sue you and most likely win if he lives.
You say no guns but for the above reason IMO a small shotgun (w/buckshot) is the best possible home defense weapon.
why are you worried about home protection? must be watching too much American tv.

If you family and you are ok, the rest should have been insured.
If it wasn't, then your fault (responsibility) for being careless.
I agree... a good "self defence" beating is fun though.
Nothing really comes close to a gun. If I get woken suddenly in the middle of the night I don’t have the immediate strength to do anything effective with a melee weapon. A gun would be the only real equalizer in that type of self defense situation.
I speak from experience because I have been in the situation before where I heard a loud bang in the middle of the night and proceeded to clear my house with a firearm. Someone did in fact force open the patio door and ran out when I slowly came down shouting something to the effect of “I have a gun”… I was mentally alert but I was very weak physically from just waking up. If I didn’t have a gun I’d probably have just been in my bedroom with my wife and nothing but a prayer that the criminal didn’t come upstairs.
And this wasn’t in Forest Lawn or some sketchy neighborhood. It was in Edgemont.

Fertilizer and benzene stuffed into the trunk should do the trick, rig up a remote detonator attached to a cell phone and it'll learn people from stealing your car pretty quick.Originally posted by sxtasy

Or if you're a baller,
True... but In Canada, your weapon must be empty, trigger locked, and your ammo locked separately.Originally posted by BigMass

By the time you unlock your gun, unlock your ammo, load it, and try and aim half tired....
I think guns in the home are more of a danger than a help.
Look at the stats.... MOST gun deaths in Canada are in the home and NOT self defense related....ie, probability states that having a gun, you are more likely to lose a family member or guest in your house versus actually killing a burglar.

Stats also show that you are more likely to be killed by an intruder if you don't have a gun.
Poor use of stats here, Toma. I usually agree with you on most stuff you post.
How many people were injured/died from violent crime in the home vs how many people died from accidental firearm discharges? Thats a stat that would hold some water.

while a gun is very tempting I can see Toma's point that a gun can sometimes cause more trouble than good. A German Sheppard or Rottweiler for the house, axe for the truck lol?
