    Default Judo/Jujuitsu clubs

    Hello beyond members,

I was looking to find a judo/jujuitsu club in Calgary that teaches mostly police style control tactics such as arm bars, choke holds, grabs/throws ect. I am steering towards more of a practical side as opposed to a MMA style.

Curious to see if any Beyonders belong to any of the Judo or Jujuitsu clubs in town and what your recomendations are. Thanks.

I teach Judo to juniors at Ishi Yama Judo Club. You don't learn chokes, arm bars or any throws till you have learned the basics. It takes about 2 years before you get into chokes or armbars.

Our club has some of the most highly ranked Judoka's in Canada.
If you are interested, drop by the club and try a workout with the seniors. Then decide if you like it or not.

What part of town are you in?

There's a can-ryu jiu jitsu club around fish creek park that focuses more on self protection. Judo is great - i've been to ishi yama, but it's a sport and it's taught as a sport.

btw, throws (at least not traditional hip throws) are not police style control tactics

PM me if you want more info on can-ryu jiu jitsu. i can steer you in the right direction.

    No kiddin'

I was with Ishi Yama as a kid under Paul Knoll - even go a silver medal at the alberta winter games way back in the day.

To the OP if you are more interested in armbars and the like you should also check out hapkido.

    Edit:

Yep, I remember if you tried to get too rough with him in newaza he would give you a couple elbows to the face...lol.

He wasn't my first sensei though, 2nd for me. My other sensei was the late Yosh Senda, the only 10th Dan judoka in North America.

damn, Mr Senda would hurt you standing. trying to grip his lapel and arm he'd nail all your pressure points.

    RIP Mr. Senda

^^ Contact lightning family martial arts in Canyon Meadows. It is ITF TKD and it is their full time job (wife and husband). They may have something. Not sure though.

    Any good?
    How's the pricing?

Looking for a studio myself. Interested in hapkido as it seems to involve a lot of different styles (from what I've seen).

Are there any studios that teach all styles of martial arts?

Edit: Looking for NW places mostly.

Sorry for the delay. If you want come and try it out one day with me. It is in Cardel. The room itself is rented but the instruction is top notch. It is a bit of a like Tae Kwon Do mixed with Judo

usually just come and talk to him and he will let you try it out. Or email him on the website and ask. It may be better for you to do it in the new year as everyone is training to rank up now so it may not be the best time.
