Default Do you wish you were somewhere else?

Let's face it, most of us wish we were somewhere else. Some are happy with where they are and wouldn't change anything. For those of us who would rather be somewhere else, what's keeping you here in Calgary? For myself it's mostly financial (and the fact that I could not sell my house all summer), for others it's family, work or even love.

Where would you rather be, why and what's keeping you from getting there?

I'd rather be in Maui but it's a far fetched dream...If I could sell my house and start a business over there I'd be happy. Unfortunately it's not so easy with a wife, kids and U.S. immigration laws but it might be possible.

I know I'm not the only one day dreaming so post away!

Id rather be in Squamish, working for Rocket Rally or something, possibly my own shop, and spending the winters sledding and skiing in Whistler.

And whats holding me back is I am still in school, dont have the money or knowledge yet to do that stuff, but one day maybe 15 years from now I will.

I'd love to move back to Europe and be closer to my family, but visiting for the last couple of summers I've realized just how much the economy sucks and how everyone is struggling.

I love my career here and will be looking to move to Vancouver soon for work, but Europe is where my heart lies.

I'm OK with where I am now, but it's not really what I want...

My dream is to study law at Keio or Waseda University.

And well, now that I've informed my boss of my plans and sold my car (the only financial obligation that could have tied me down), I'm hopefully leaving in about 250 days. Then only some studying and a test will stand in my way!

    Some dreams come true, right?

I'm in Calgary for now because I have just graduated, and need some funds to start my life. Where I want to go is unknown to me at this point, though I do have a few ideas.

I was thinking about going to Finland after finishing my last degree. Stayed for love.

Now I'm back in school again. I'm not a big fan of Calgary but I'm here for the foreseeable future.

    What's keeping me in Calgary?
Everything I have is here. If I go elsewhere, I'm screwed haha so I'll just stick to take a few weeks off every year and just travel where ever it is I want to go. The grass always seems greener on the other side but there's nothing like home.

I used to wish that I was somewhere other than Calgary and then I moved. My move to Victoria has been nothing short of satisfying and am probably in as good or even better situation than I was in Calgary.

Living in Calgary it was almost incessant for me to want to continue travelling but I find this recent move has cured almost all of that urge.

That being said, of course I'd love to be on a warm beach or off hiking the rainforest, but at least this way I only have to wait until summer and I can drive to both of those places and enjoy it all.

Only downside of course is parting from family and friends.

i rather live somewhere in california, either LA, San Fran, San Diego. Whats keeping me here is job security with good pay and having 2 properties here, one if which i just built and moved into. if i can get rid of it then maybe i'd look into it more

My buddy did the move to San Diego in 2006. He loves it down there. He got lucky timing wise, sold his house for almost double what he paid for and bought a foreclosure cash...must be nice.

Europe would be the first choice.
Orange county(California) is the second and more realistic goal.

School is keeping me behind, but i aint happy here and def need a change. Hopefully 3-5 years from now i can look at this thread and give an update from a "new" place.

anywhere near Vancouver is my goal right now. It's beautiful and has everything you need.

What's keeping me here is job/family right now. I really like Calgary 9 months of the year, its just the 3 months that's coming up that really depresses you and sucks the energy out. Snow hits and its nice for a while then all the dirt makes the city look ugly and then the -20 days which just sucks.

When I lived in Northern BC, I wanted to be somewhere else so badly, so I moved to Calgary and really enjoyed all that the city had to offer, especially since I was only 19 when I arrived and had no obligations or commitments and could only grow & prosper.

After a few years, I wanted to be somewhere else again, and I finally moved back to BC at the end of September. It took awhile to finally break off my relationship with the city given I have all sorts of connections there, but I am so much happier and far less stressed living out here on the Island, enjoying a new job and living in a great new community.

Calgary is a great city if you want to make money... after awhile some people find that chasing money gets a little stale and seek out other things in life... that's what happened to me anyway. I wanted a better life for my family and myself, so now we're here and loving every minute of it.

Life is about taking a few risks. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but you never want to regret not giving it a shot.
