    Default Mexico tragedy!

    Holy shit: http://www.calgarysun.com/news/world.../16137331.html

Friends of mine were scheduled to go there next week. Sad for the families involved. Father and his nine yr old son killed. Wife and daughter survived.

Last year my fiance taught the little boy who was killed, she's pretty upset about it. Especially since he was one of the good ones.

That's sad. I'm from Drumheller but did not know the family. Drum is still pretty small town so this is unfortunate for sure.

    Terrible tragedy!

Personally, I'm done with that ghetto, fake paradise that people refer to as Mexico.

They attempt to extort their #1 business by scamming Canadian and American tourists wherever they can.
Their hotels are unsafe, with the "fridge stocking" guys rummaging through your luggage and whatever else they can find of value.
The staff then expect tips after stealing your shit.
The food is tiresome in those resorts.
There are too many unsolved murders at these resorts which begs the question, what does all the security at the gates do?!?

Don't get me wrong, its warm and the ocean is beautiful but the people there, I could do without. Call me racist or whatever, but I'm not going back to Mexico. The shake down after shake down of tourists for extra money needs to stop.

But there's always people that will disagree... so here you go:

Calgary to Gran Bahia Principe Mexico for $777/person!!!

^^^ Honestly, we very much enjoyed our time there - with absolutely not negative experiences. I think maybe that's why people (such as myself) keep doing?

I've decided to boycott Mexico. Cuba is next for me.

More canadians killed in Mexico....seems like the place to go to die, it's almost becoming normal to hear "another Canadian dies in Mexico"

RIP to the victims. Very sad story

Same here, never had a single one of the above issues.

Leave tips for everyone that comes into your room and it will greatly reduce the chances of them going through your stuff.

Been to Mexico, Cuba twice, and the Dominican - loved them all, not a single issue with food, staff, accommodation, etc.

I can see how a poor experience would leave a sour taste in one's mouth though, but it certainly isn't the norm. Just think of how many people are at those resorts every day. You only hear about the bad stuff so it seems like a lot.

Mexico will seems great until you travel to other spots....grand cayman, turks and caicos, Bahamas, st Lucia.

I guess it comes down to you really get what you pay for. I'd say Mexico would be the bottom, pretty much anything else is better.

I've been to Mexico twice, I've left money and valuables out in the room and have never had anything so much as touched. I go to 5 star Riu hotels, not spring break party cheap hotels, perhaps that makes a difference. I'll still keep going when I can afford to go.

Yes I've heard South America is the place to go where there's never any crime, unrest, poor building codes and unscrupulous hotel workers. Medellin comes to mind as a safe place. Much unlike that drug hotbed of the Mayan peninsula.

    RIP to the people, but...

Mexican officials believe the blast was caused after natural gas from a swamp close to the hotel built up under one of the hotel lobbies and somehow was ignited.

    Yeah, I'm sure.

This is the approach I take whenever I travel to other countries and it has worked well thusfar. I've never had issues in Mexico that I wouldn't have had in a LOT of other countries.

You guys think Mexico is bad. Travel around Jamaica for a week. Not at a resort in Montego Bay....actually go into the country.

I LOVE Mexico. I'm going to retire there one day.

Some of the deceased traveled through Westjet vacations, and I have been following Westjet's response to all of this and it is pretty remarkable what they are doing... They took one plane out of service and chartered it down down there with a team of people to help victims and also bring back anyone who wants to leave early. Westjet's response to the situation is pretty awesome, just watned to point that out haha.

    RIP to those who passed

I find it hilarious that some people go as far as saying 'Boycott Mexico' Id say 90% of the fatalities/injuries are because people are in Mexico and feel they can do whatever they want. (Lets go do coke yeeeaaaahhhh!)

What would you say to a Brazillian that has only heard the story of the student getting shot and losing his eye in Calgary? Boycott Canada? His story was a complete fluke, but stuff like that can happen anywhere. ie. Gas leak explosion.

I have been going to Mexico for close to 10 years, and never once had a problem. In fact my family feels its safe enough that we own a condo in Puerto Vallarta, and as a current example we feel its safe enough that my Mom is down with 3 friends right now.

My condolences to the people in the accident.
