Default Fedex, Canada Customs, and Power of Attorney

Has anyone had issues bringing Food, Liquids, supplements or any products for Consumption into Canada from the USA?

Fedex Canada border clearance called me today asking me to fill out a Power of Attorney form along with another form with my CC info to pay for duties and GST.

Anyway I called the supplier and they've never heard of this, nor had issues shipping to Canada with the products I've ordered.

    Puzzled.

As well she gave me the runabout of Canada Food agency or something like that checking all packages now.

I've heard of the power of attorney before from Fedex before but I've never had to sign one. I assumed it was just to clear the package and pay on your behalf.

From what I gathered so far info wise, It's for Commercial.

    Fedex will always bill later.

    This is why it's strange.

I know in general all products being shipped via air are having increased security due to the terrorist issues last week (the bomb that was found inside a shipment of printers...), could be something to do with that if it was going air.

This is correct. I deal with Fedex/UPS on a commercial basis. They forwarded the paperwork but by the time It was filled out the package was already delivered so it was never submitted.

Have you asked the why they require this from you as it is personal goods?

She would not give me a definite answer. It pissed me off.

She kept on telling me some sort of Canadian Food Board was monitoring all income packages or some bullshit.

At the end of the Conversation she said the government wants to keep a tab on all the things that go into our bodies.

I literally laughed, and said fucking Socialists and she said I know the end of the world is coming.

10 seconds later she forwarded the papers via email and the conversation was over. Fucked up lol.

The government is cracking down on supplements. There is a new set of rules regarding labeling and approval of ingredients by Health Canada. Most of this stuff is being stopped at the border now.

I might be able to shed some light on this, as I work for a customs broker releasing shipments through Canada customs.

Most recently our Govt decided that anything we consume, or use on our bodies (makeup/creams/personal hygiene items) all need to be tracked with the cfa.

Courier companies (ups/fedex) require you to fill out a "one time" POA form in order to get the goods released and then delivered to your location. Of course, anything you import into Canada requires you to pay duty/taxes so that doesn't raise too much concern.

Your other option is to ask FedEx for a copy of the manifest used on your shipment and then take that yourself to the customs office @ the airport which then means you don't need to fill out the POA form. Just show up pay your duty/taxes and you can walk out with your goods.

    Summary:

POA - If you want fedex to deliver direct.
No POA - You go pick it up from the customs office.

I'm bumping this for general information
I have a package from the US currently being held in customs and no word from Fedex when it will be released, I filled out all the forms etc and sent the info to Fedex so they can take care of everything since that's what I thought was best

Currently Canada Customs won't tell me anything regarding my package, can't even be bothered to lift a finger or even shed light, I called Fedex a few times to see if there's a status update but the call centre has none

Can I go to customs myself and pick it up with the paperwork that Fedex gave me? I've been given a few different updates from Fedex, one saying that they were waiting for my paperwork to come in, another saying they have all they need for now and the last one is they don't know what's going on, is this not the point of a broker to help you along the way?

fyi The package has been in customs since last week

This is an old thread but I am now in the same scenario with DHL. They sent me the forms and that's fine except there is really no instruction on where to find certain #'s.

They want something called a cargo control number as well as a GST number. Where the hell do I get this stuff?

I'd believe they are cracking down on food.

US dairy milk has a dozen different chemicals, its suspected of making people fat, lazy and stupid (like one can actually blame the milk for that, lol) Of course in China, milk is just straight tainted with melamine.

Now that they have opened the books on what the Canadian government fed natives a few decades ago, I think its prudent to require extra checks.

The US had such regard for safety of its own citizens, that they open air tested a hundred nukes in Nevada afterall.

How do I find out where my package is being held? It was shipped using DHL Express Worldwide which I believe is via plane. Does that mean my package is at the airport in Calgary?

Trying to work around DHL on this and deal directly with customs myself.
