Fucking Alberta

Hi Andrea,
I'm curious why the Alberta government suspended sales of 11.9%+ beer even if it is considered to be a "spirit" rather then a beer? You're the supervisor of product and pricing at the AGLC, so I figured you'd know best. Being only 26, I found it hilarious that the papers stated the reason was to cut down on youth drinking. I know for myself and those I grew up with, we liked cheap booze like Colt 45 and Big Bear, or cheap hard stuff like vodka, not expensive high liquor content beers. Being a beer drinker, I've never even seen one of these to this day.
I'm curious whether we can expect to see these back on the shelves in the near future, perhaps with a higher price tag to compensate for the government wanting a bigger slice of delicious cheese?
My mother once told me "if you can't do something that makes sense, do nothing at all." I'm wondering if you possibly have room for her to go mentor over at the AGLC?
Thanks for your time,
(name removed)

How much does this "report" cost the taxpayers anyways? The AGLC suspended sales of the beers until a report can examine whether they contribute to binge drinking. That report will likely be presented to the AGLC board next spring.
It's probably one of those things where contracts get handed out to bogus companies and money gets passed around.

My buddy couldnt find any in Phoenix.. Im hoping good ole Mexico will hook me up!
A quote from one of my favorite movies. Slighty modified to suit our "father knows best" Alberta government.
To me, it makes no sense. If you've got alcohol, you've got alcohol. So why 5.5% instead of 12%?
You know a drunk's just gonna drink twice as many beers to get drunk. So not only do you have
a drunk on your hands... but you got a drunk who's fat and gross.

Got my response. The result? More tax.
Thank you for your e-mail expressing your opinion regarding the registration of beer products in Alberta in excess of 11.9 per cent alcohol by volume.
The Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC) received applications for registration of two new beers at 18.2 per cent and 23 per cent alcohol by volume. These alcohol contents are significantly higher than any other currently registered beer products in Alberta.
Because of this, the AGLC deferred registering these products – or any new high-alcohol beer – in order to consider how these products should be handled. The AGLC considered how high alcohol beer is treated in other Canadian jurisdictions, and the feedback received from agencies, suppliers, liquor stores, and the public. During this time, the existing beer products on hand in Alberta continued to be available to retailers and the public.
The Board has considered your opinion, as well as those that have been expressed by other concerned parties, and has decided to continue registering beer products in Alberta over 11.9 per cent at this time.
In order to remain consistent with how other higher-alcohol products are treated, a higher provincial mark-up rate will be applied to these products. Higher mark-up rates have been applied to other categories of higher-alcohol products (like coolers and other refreshment beverages) in Alberta for many years. This is also consistent with the federal government’s treatment of products in excess of 11.9 per cent as “imitation spirits” for the purposes of excise duty.
For more information including the new mark-up rates go to aglc.ca.
Thank you for your interest.

First beer that's coming looks like this one:

Second is possibly the Dogfish Head Worldwide Stout? 18% beer ordinarily, but as high as 23% back in 2002.

So no ban then? Go figure, eh - the AGLC suspended sales just like they said and are starting things back up again.
Will fuck off, again.
I'm curious if wine receives the same markup? as most wines are over 11.9%
Ya, pretty close. Big rate difference, no wonder they were so concerned.
http://aglc.ca/pdf/quickfacts/markup_rates_schedule.pdf
I suppose if wine gets a markup it's only fair that beer does as well. They're probably doing it for the money. They think we're stupid telling us it's because homeless people are walking into willow park and getting hammered off dark belgian ales in the parking lot is a big issue.
Would be interesting to see how much money this latest round of pointless meddling has cost the provincial taxpayers (see image above).
They've sprung the perfect trap:
Step 1.) Threaten a ban on a product, creating media firestorm.
Step 2.) Decide to continue selling contentious product, with much higher taxes.
Step 3.) Reap tax dollars from all the bottles flying off the shelves because of Step 1.
Meanwhile, broke high schoolers and loser bums will continue to play "Edward 40 Hands" with Colt 45 and Big Bear:
