Hi everyone,
I purchased a 98 Subaru Legacy as a winter car, but it needs a new timing belt put on. I was wondering if anyone knew of a really cheap place to get this done, where they will still do a good job installing it.

Define "really cheap". I recently spent $1100 to get mine done in a 2002 WRX. But that was all OEM parts, water pump, and accessory belts as well.Originally posted by civickid_21

EDIT: The timing belt was $260 and the labor would have been ~$250 on just the belt. But you may as well replace that other shit while you're in there. That's of course if you plan on keeping the car.

There is one timing belt on each side (per cam) on the flat-4 engine I believe. Maybe e-mail JDM source, they may have a suggestion

Holy cow that is one long belt!
Cheap would be not the best choice of words when dealing with a very important part of a engines life, I can understand wanting to get a good deal but I wouldn't want to sacrifice the engine blowing if done incorrectly by someone not experienced and using non OE parts.
I say shop around and get quotes.
Alright thanks for everyone's replies.
I don't plan on keeping the car to long, but was hoping to have it changed for the next owner.
It is a very important piece of the engine fore sure. Thats why I thought I would check to see if anyone knew of an affordable shop that does quality work.
lol nice one

Just got my timing belt kit from Fred Beans parts in the states yesterday. Just for parts, OEM Gates Timing Belt, OEM Tensioners and Pulleys, OEM Waterpump, total cost was about $400USD, but I am going to be installing it all myself.
Subaru's are the worst motors to try to get a "cheap" TB job done on imo. Go to a reputable place with experience working on subaru boxer motors, and let cost be your second concern rather than the first.
