Default .EMF filetype = mind blown

I got sent a .EMF file format image today and it came through email @ 967KB

When I opened it up in MS paint, it revealed it's size:

    4492 x 3386 pixels
    @ 72 PPI

    or 62" x 47"

That's friggen massive size, just blew my mind.

A JPG format at that file size would only yield 900 pixels or so worth of image.

How can the file size be so small? and how can a compressed image file like this be created?

    Cool

"EMF files are basically a file recording a sequence of Windows graphics functions, and thus while easily read on Microsoft Windows computers, are much harder to read on other platforms. "

so i guess it doesnt draw the picture when you see it, rather it is just code that windows reads then produces an image?

looks like it could be similar to vector graphics, which as mentioned are the best for blowing up / printing as they are not constrained by size; you can make them as big or as small as you want. (.svg is one of the common extensions for vector, but i believe most .pdf's are vector as well). inkscape is a great free vector editor. it runs on windows / linux, not sure about osx.

Nope, it wasn't vector, it was a photo with pixels, it would distort when enlarged.
