Default buying car with insurance claim ongoing

    Hey,

Looking at a car that got in an accident (not owners fault) and the only damage done was minor to the hood and bumper. There was a claim started through his insurance which is not yet finished, car not appraised for damages and nothing fixed yet. Plus a police report was filled out.

This happened a week ago but of course to sit around and wait for insurance to get the ball rolling and car fixed will take a LONG time. And I am not going to wait months.

So I want to buy this car, will there be any issues? what would my insurance company say in regards to this? Anyone bought or sold a car with a claim still in progress?

In theory it shouldn't be an issue. In reality though, I would either wait or find something else.

I wouldn't buy anything which is not in a condition which you wish to purchase it.

    Wtf?

The car has damage, he knows it has damage, that is the condition in which he wishes to purchase it...

My understanding is that there is a claim pending on it, as it has not been assessed for damages, nor fixed yet.

I guess my question to the OP is: Do you intend on purchasing the vehicle as it sits (damaged) and then he collects the insurance money himself, or are you expecting it to be fixed at some point due to the insurance claim?

If the former, then the only issue you have to watch out for is if it gets salvaged. (As stated by C-ZUS).

If you are planning on the car getting fixed via his insurance, I would wait on everything is settled.

Only issue with the car is the front bumper was back into causing some paint to rub off and the bumper pushed in a bit...nothing that would warrant the car to be a write-off.

Called my insurance and they say that I may not be able to get collision coverage as there is already an accident on the car, or since it's minor I would have to provide pictures and they won't cover the existing damage if the car gets into another accident.
