Makes sense. Would it be cheaper to get a low budget machine and put it in a data centre?

    $10 / month for 100gb of storage

Much cheaper than a machine in a data center.

And 100 GB is plenty for me. I'm not trying to backup downloaded movies or anything. If my house burns down, the last thing I'll be worried about is being able to watch Top Gun again. I'll be a lot more concerned about my documents and photos.

I know someone who had all their photos on a laptop. Everything since her daughter was born. Laptop crashed, everything is gone.

You realize you are talking to the guy who made his own furniture out of salad bowls right?

Depends what you mean by crashed. I've never known a crash to make things irretrievable.

Yeah, I have no idea. She couldn't fix it,and she took it to someone, and they couldn't retrieve anything.
I have all my important stuff on mirrored drives on the NAS. But still, in event of a fire, flood, tornado etc, offsite backup makes sense.

I spent a lot of time in my previous job looking at backup strategies. For me, I look at events where I could lose my data and then look at ways to mitigate the risk for those events:

1 - Physical damage to the site (ie: lightning, fire, flood, theft)
2 - Damage to the device storing the data
3 - Damage to the data itself

So how I deal with those is:

1 - Backups are stored off-site (photos can be stored on flickr, documents on dropbox, a dedicated cloud backup service, a portable drive you leave in a safety deposit box, etc.)
2 - Redundant systems (for the purposes of personal data at home, a mirror of the drives at home)
3 - Multiple versions of the data (most personal data is family photos/videos, so 1 version is usually sufficient).

I've known people who believe mirrored RAID arrays are all the backup they need . RAID setups mitigate risk with physical drive failures. It doesn't protect you from data corruption or any changes with the data (ie: overwriting files, deletions, etc). To mitigate those risks, you want to have backups.
