Cloud Backup Service

Does anyone have any experience with online cloud subscription-based backup solutions? I'd like something with a really nice light-weight client application that does everything in the background without bugging you. I think around 150 gigs would be enough. Obviously the cheaper subscription rate, the better. Thoughts?

I've spent a lot of time reviewing cloud backups...

Things to watch out for:

How do they calculate cost/GB ? Protected vs. Stored size pricing vs. uncompressed. $xx / GB from one place to another isn't necessarily the same. Some places start out really low and based on how they define the pricing system, the cost/month grows considerably. I think this is the most important thing to watch out for.

Are your backups at the cloud provider, backed up? What kind of data centres are they running? What tier?

What kind of compression (ie: file vs. block level encryption)? Is there deduplication?

What can you backup and what can you restore? ie: Some backups allow you to backup your outlook mailbox and restore individual emails while others only backup. Others allow you to backup SQL databases incrementally and restore individual tables.

Can you define your own retention policies? How many generations of data can you keep?

Dropbox is insecure. Anyone that does deduplication is insecure.

Wuala by LaCie is one that does it right (and they accept bitcoin!)

Client side block level de-duplication , de-dupes your data before you transmit it over your secure connection. Along with block level compression, this saves a ton of BW charges and storage charges.

I suppose, if they do server side you would have to do it on your unencrypted data.

Cloud is just the latest buzz-word for "Internet" that the non-technical marketing types have jumped on.

Yeah that is correct. De-duping is more common on the server side, because the client doesn't usually have as much duplicated data. But if it is done client-side, pre-encryption, then my comment doesn't apply.

Hmm wuala looks good, but seems a bit expensive compared to the other ones. I would need at least 100 gigs and that's $129/yr with Wuala vs. some of the other guys that do $60/yr unlimited.

Lol I think everyone knows that. It's just the term to use these days.

Who does free cloud backups? Maybe if you are looking for a gig or so... but I can't find any free ones that give you a reasonable amount.

I use Carbonite, love it. Encrypted and it just runs in the background.

Any suggestions for backup up a NAS? it looks like Carbonite doesn't do this.
I don't really keep any of my data on the computer hard drive, it's all on my network drive.
Could I just move the relevant files to the computer hard drive, back them up online, then delete them? That kind of defeats the automatic backup feature though . . .

I think Carbonite does it. They have a 15 day free trial.. worth a try to see if it will do what you want. Pretty decent pricing at $60 for a year.

Carbonite clearly states that it will not backup "external" drives, and I'm sure NAS counts as external.

Although, I just noticed that I have nearly 200 GB free on my computers HDD, so maybe I'll just move the relevant files off my NAS, and let carbonite back up the HDD. I don't really need my music and downloaded movies backed up, I can always get those again if the house burns down. the Photos of my kid, not so much.

depending on your nas, spideroak may work. Or even your NAS provider might have a backup client for it.

...........or just forward port 22 on your switch and access everything for free? I can get any of my files from anywhere in the world. My desktop, laptop and my phone are all connected via SSH.
