Default Be carefull on Building Permits for basement window additions....

I really never paid much attention, and always assumed when you hired a guy to come cut your concrete, and install a new basement window, they went out and got the permits required.

    Well don't assume shit lol.

I've run into 3 cases now where the contracter never pulled a permit.

And on one of them, I almost got stung.

I'm currently undergoing a development and building permit to legalize a previously illegal basement suite.

The prior owner added a window to the side of the house. Well, there are rules as to area of total glazing allowed, and with the new window I am over the limit.

They almost made me remove the window.

    Fuck, lol

Just a heads up, these dirt bags aren't pulling permits, and it must be up to the home owner i guess.

When I hire an electrician, he usually pulls them if required, I woulda thought it was the same.

    Anyway.

I don't believe the concrete cutters normally pulled the permits.

I worked as one when I first moved to Calgary and never once did we pull permits, seems it was in the homeowners hands or the general contractor. I don't remember even asking about them before but did do a few windows in places that you could bet didn't have permits pulled for them.

It's up to you, the property owner to make sure all required permits are in place. Not the individual subtrades. Most generals will look after them as well, but ultimately you're responsible.

I agree. like if I hired a separate Window installer, and separate concrete cutter etc... so if I WAS the contracter, I would of course pull a permit.

But when you go out and find a contractor that does the whole job including subcontracting out the concrete work (or doing it themselves), or whatever, I would assume they would be pulling permits, AND/OR I would think the individual traded would be refusing to do work if no permit was issued.

Anyway, it's a done deal, just a heads up.
