    Default kids with stupid names

Recently I was spending some time with my two young nephews age 5 and 3 named Griffin and Blake -____- anyway picked up the older one from his kindergarten and I saw all his classmates' name tags on their coat rack. The names include

    TWO Griffins
Xavier (also my nephew Griffin's middle name...)
    Star
    Cain
    Thor
    Malachai

This is in a class of about 20-25 kids. In this sampling the boys seem to get hit hardest with the terrible names, but lately it seems like kitschy names like this are extremely popular.

Can any parents chime in on this, do your kids have classmates with these kind of names? Why are parents doing this? How are the kids feeling about their stupid names?

Xavier is a common spanish name, so it's no different than any other kid with a spanish name.

The rest are definetely kind of weird. Griffin and Cain are last names.....chinese people are notorious for giving their kids western surnames as first names.

I don't see anything stupid about any of those names.

I went to school with every name on that list other than Thor. Although i dont particularly like Thor on anything other than a comic character; I couldn't say the name is "stupid"

btw, what is your name? Maybe we can call it stupid too.

Xavier, Thor and Cain are moderately common names

Thor (and most Norse god names) are common for Icelandic and Scandinavian origins. I know if your last name is Thor in Iceland you have some sort of legal right to perform marriages.

There was a bunch of Xavier's in my highschool, Since most of the Caribbean and South America was originally Spanish it made its way around.

And Cain is a Hebrew name.

I have met people with some odd names. Ex, Tulip and her sister was named Lilly or some other flower (no they were not strippers).

Now if I ever met someone name Gaylord Focker I would be very amused.

I know one person named Thor.

As for the rest, I have never actually met a single person with those names.

I do however know about 50 Ryans.

    In Spanish it's Javier.

Meeting someone of Hispanic descent named Xavier would be less likely than meeting a Canadian named Müslix.

In English it would be the Ex-avier, in Spanish it's Hav-ier.

I didn't think any of the names in this thread were stupid.

Sometimes you have to be careful when selecting a new name for yourself. For instance, let's say you have chosen the nickname "Fly
Head." Normally you would think that "fly Head" would mean a person who has beautiful swept-back features, as if flying through the air. But
think again. Couldn't it also mean "having a head like a fly"? I'm afraid some people might actually think that.

I think I'm more bothered by parents who came up with absurd ways to spell their kids' names.

My friend knew someone who spelt her kid's name phonetically because she didn't know how it was supposed to be spelt: Desire/Desiree was spelt Deserray. Brutal! Hahahaha!

I was going to say the same thing.

But fortunately I looked it up first:

    The boy's name Xavier \x(a)-
is pronounced ecks-ZAY-vee-er, ZAY-vee-er. It is of Spanish, Arabic and Basque origin...

Mahrie, and Jaxin. The first one was a combination of two other names and the second one was a way for the parents to show they were cool.

I was in a school where there were a set of twins. One of them was named Mohammed or something, and his twin was named "Same." I'm not sure if they were going for "Sammy" or something and spelled it weird, but he seemed to respond to the name as it's spelled--Same. Poor kid.
