Why wouldn't the mandate come from the same place that gave them the authority to purify and distribute it in the first place?

Exactly. And I wasn't trying to end the discussion, fluoride in water is pretty well studied. If people can claim climate change agreement is unanimous, then fluoride in tap water certainly is.

It's not government overreach At least in our current state of gov intervention.

    I agree with kertejud?

Bigmass, you mean a mandate to govern public health? You don't think that should be their mandate? Whatever your stance is regarding the fluoridation of our drinking water, who exactly would you like to make the decision?

I have little to no idea what chemicals and processes go into creating the clean drinking water that flows from my tap. But I'm glad gov't has the mandate to deal with it, what's the alternative?

Calgary tap water tastes fucking disgusting...

I can't even drink it after filtering it with a Brita or whatever, fairly sure it gives me diarrhea if I drink lots of it

Wow, that's a pretty interesting statement. It's some of the cleanest drinking water in the world. I suppose it's a bit on the hard side though.

I guess it's all what you are used to.

I don't know how you guys can like the taste of it...i find myself having to add in things like MIO or Ice Tea powder to make it drinkable - even the smell of it makes me gag sometimes

When my girlfriend and I moved into our new house, one of our friends bought us a Brita filter so we would stop using water coolers/bottled water. Then we both ended up with diarrhea after a little while...couldn't work out what was doing it, and then we switched back to bottled water and have been fine since

Could it be the hardness causing it?

    Was that brita brand new?

I'd look at that, or what you ate, before Calgary tap water..

Do you have this problem in other buildings? There could be something nasty in your house pipes.

When I was a kid, I lived in Ontario and the water was fluoridated. My teeth were fantastic - I brushed my teeth, but it's not like I was obsessed, I just had great teeth for some reason! Hmmm....

I moved to Calgary in the early 80's, and by the time I was a teenager, my teeth were completely fucked. They deteriorated insanely fast, like 2-3 years and I was having cavities all the time no matter what level of effort I put in to keep them clean.

1991 fluoridation was way too late to save me.

There is absolutely no doubt it my mind that fluoridating water is good for the health of people's teeth.

I've got lots of issues with the city but I've never had or heard of anyone having an issue with the smell or taste of the water, let alone it making anyone sick

Flossing and tongue scraping is just as important as brushing.

"Tongue scraping". Gosh that sounds horrible

Yeah, I had the same problem up in Coventry in my old house, and now in Copperfield

The brita was brand new and we were changing the filter when the little indicator told us to

Don't know about it being something in the pipes, as the cat and dog drink it fine without any issues (which obviously isn't a great indicator but ya know...),

How would I go about finding something like that out? Anyone wanna live with me for a month and drink nothing but tap-water?

Calgary water is very hard, which does impart some taste.

Ya I would imagine a message sent to the CoC that you thought your tap water was causing illness would be responded too fairly promptly.

When it comes to the Brita, does it not say to soak or flush a new filter?

Like I said, I think every municipality has water that tastes slightly different, and when I come home from travelling it's apparent right way. However I've never heard of anyone finding the taste or smell of Calgary water so bad they couldn't handle drinking it. Most of my relatives from out east actually comment that it tastes better than home.
