Default My Ducati 888 SPO is in trouble...

I have finally encountered something that has me stumped.

While riding my 1993 888 SPO (rather hard, but nowhere near redline) into a corner in third gear, suddenly the red oil light flickered on, and the engine began making a jingling noise. I shut it down & called a friend to bring me my trailer.

Ducatis, especially these damn four-valve models, are fucking expensive to split the cases and do major repairs. They are very complicated engines, and like women, are sweet when they are running well. Money must be spent to keep her happy. And if she turns into a bitch, she can clean you out.

So, I have had my riding and mechanical buddies suggest everything from "perhaps the key in the oil-pump has sheared..." to "No, It sounds like a piston problem" to "maybe something broke off" (like D'uuhhh...). No one knows, and these bikes are so complex that without special tools and specific know-how, an amateur like me is unable to adjust the desmodromic valvetrain. let alone split the case and poke around looking for stuff. This ain't no old Triumph Bonneville here.l

So, before I embark on this akin-to-brainsurgery project, I should get ideas and advice from anyone who may have experienced something like this. I hate like hell to pay several months salary to have some shop do this.

Anyone got some familiarity with things that go jingle in the sump?

I know a very good Ducati Mechanic, he works at the shop where I work (Walt Healy) here in Calgary. He's off until next week at least tho. I'll ask him about this.

    Sounds like oil-pump destruction tho.

One of the best Ducati mechanics in Calgary is Paul Shore, who worked at Blackfoot (Or Deerfoot or Stinkfoot, or whatever the fuckin place was called) He is now at a BMW dealership somewhere, I last heard. I mean to find him one day, as I regard the guy as a True Master.

Its a small world. Is this the guy?

Yeah, Paul's good, I dunno where he is right now, but I can find out. Dan Watt (the guy I know) is a good friend of his. I used to work at Blackfoot as well, as did Dan. I'll ask around tommorow and find out where Paul is working now.

I knew Paul when he and I both lived in Winnipeg. He was really into BMW's then, and I had an FLT and later, an FLH Police Special that Paul helped me buy in Rapid City S.D. during Sturgis.
    Great guy.
It is too bad that although Vancouver and Calgary are not really that far apart, I have lost touch with the guy. I have heard reports that he and his wife Anne were at SuperBike Week in Kelowna, the Laverda Rally in Nakusp, and regularily go and strafe Hwy 31A north of Nelson a lot.

Last I heard, he rode a 916. However to my suprise, I saw a wild Buell in Western Bike World (or wutevver the rag is called) that was "Owned and Ridden by Anne Shore, and built by her husband Paul". It was INCREDIBLE...and I am not much of a Buell aficionado.

It goes to support a post I made elsewhere regarding bikes being personal art forms.
