It doesn't have to be like that, I put an 02 sensor into the exhaust on my 440, and spent a day tuning it, then I recurved the distributor to ensure it had full advance at cruise.. It gets stupid good mileage for how big and raunchy of truck it is.

That's a good interim idea. My long term plan is to put a 6BT 12-valve into it, and a overdrive transmission. The great thing about 73-77 fords, is they have divorced transfer cases, which can be good or bad, depending how you look at it, but it does allow me to put pretty much any transmission I want into it.

I'm thinking a T56, with 0.5 ratio 6th gear. That'll almost double my highway mileage right there. I know it'll take decades to recoup the costs, but at least the engine won't be drowning out conversations at 120km.h, lol.

The 6bt is a great motor to swap, I am thinking of doing the same to a Ramcharger.
As long as you keep the power down to a sane level, 6bt is awesome on fuel. My old 94 3/4 12valve 2wd was well over 25 mpg.
I am not sure I would like a T56 in a 4x4, Its nice to have a nice slow crawl ratio sometimes. Other options would be Nv5600, G56 or check out the spicer 3053.

Another divorced case advantage is a longer front driveshaft if you want to put a lot of lift on the truck. Even with a 4" suspension on mine I had to clearance the front yokes so they wouldn't bind when the truck was airborne and the suspension drooped.

In a 1325km drive from Calgary to Winnipeg I averaged 9.5L/100km in my 2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD. It's a 6speed manual/LLY Duramax variant with a cold air intake, banks 6 gun tuner and a no restriction exhaust system. Pretty decent for what it is.

So my speedo cable got disconnected one day but remembered my destination so you just have to add 30km to the ticker or 19 miles:

    172km total distance.

    11MPG or 21L/100km

    SO CLOSE!

Mixed driving varies between 12 to 15 L/100km on my 1999 4Runner set to RWD. Haven't measured it in 4WD yet.

I think a long trip will be an indicator of what highway mileage the LR can do.

There's no point tracking city mileage because that speedo doesn't work and wouldn't put my life on it.

My fuel gauge is notoriously inaccurate, to avoid running out of gas I never let it get near empty. I basically drive my truck 300 kilometres, then fill it up again. I see how many litres it takes to fill and use that as the basis of my calculations.
