    Default differential oil 04 f150

in my 04 f150 i had my rear pinon seal fixed and new oil added by the mechanic. now 500km later i hear a whining noise from the rear of the truck that wasn't there before. is it possible they use different oil, that could cause the noise??? is there something else i need to put in with the oil?? or is just cold out? i've only had the truck for a few months and the noise started after getting the seal fixed.

i kinda think it sounds like i hear the gears making noise. hard to explain, should just take it back to them i guess and get them to take a look at it.

Yeah that is why I figured it isnt shimmed properly. I have heard many issues of improperly shimmed rear ends exploding.

OR, just thought of this, they didnt add the correct amount of friction modifier.

Ya that's totally the noise. I couldn't remember the name should I go ahead and add some. Trucks are new to me. Just trying to figure it out.

Do some reading on f150 online about adding friction modifier. I have never done it personally

friction modifier is only used in rear axles with LSD clutch packs. not putting any in wont do any damage, but it will allow your clutch packs to slip when they don't need to and cause premature wear

If you had your rear pinion seal replaced I would put my money on the fact that the mechanic did not replace the crush sleeve and as a result ring and crown have the wrong backlash.

At Minimum when you do a Ford Pinion seal, you need to place the flange nut exactly at the depth that it was from the factory.

I would take it back to them and demand that they rebuild your rear axle. a whine from the rear end is a sign of wear, and incorrect tooth contact. it can also be a sign of low fluid, but in this case I'm sure its from improper back lash.

best of luck to you man.

It's an error and mechanics are human.

Talk to them and try to resolve this first. If they don't agree to repair their error, then contact amvic.

I definitely think its from the pinion bolt torque, and it's very avoidable.

Don't let them tighten it and call it a day, the pinion bearing is damaged and needs to replaced by someone competent.

i understand if the guy made a mistake, that's fine it happens. the guy at the desk is very difficult to talk to, which is why i didn't intend on going back there. now to try and find a way to make them fix it, if it is what you guys are saying.

ya true, hopefully it doesn't sound like i'm blaming them. it could be a number of things, i'm sure. for my sake hopefully they messed up and can fix it back to normal. if not more money into the pit.

im wondering if it was leaking through the splines or the seal its self, ive seen both. im thinking this is more of a oops than worn out parts. but on the other hand ive rebuilt like three of these diff in the last year or so, all for pinion problems.

friction modifier is to help the clutch slip more so they dont grab and cause clunking and binding on turns. when your doing a pinion seal you mark the pinion nut. then when you put it back on you put it a touch tighter to compress the crush sleeve a little more, it you put it back in the exact same spot there will be no pre-load on the pinion bearings, so now the pinion can flop around and cause more noise and wear. ide say thats what happend here.

i didn't want to go back to the same shop so i went to a specialist so i went to dominion transmission. all he could do on friday was take it for a drive and he said for sure it's the bearings in the differential. so he wants to replace all four, for about $700-$800. would it be cheaper for me to buy a whole new rear end?? this one has 165k km on it. any ideas, also which bearings is he replacing?? 2 pinion 2 axle?? i forget which ones he said.

I dont know why you would just replace bearings. the shop it taking a big gamble doing that. if it was me i would replace ring gear, pinion, side bearings, pinion bearings, crush sleeve, pinion seal, both axle seals.
