I guess you are handing Japan a pass here for all those murders, rapes, tortures and other atrocities they committed during WWII?

Or does natural disaster fury only work for the USA?

Heh, never mind, that pic is fake.

Buuut now there was an explosion at a nuclear plant or something. Chernobyl part 2?

Wow. Just wow. I wish this kind of disaster on nobody - and you even writing that without a smiley makes me sad... even if it was (I hope) a poor joke.

As far as the WWII atrocities - Broken Legs has a point. We're all snuggly-up-friendly with the Japs now - which is the way it should be... but they were pretty ruthless. I've heard stories from my Flip wife about their occupation. Not very good stuff.

At least when America attacks another country you know it's about oil as opposed to, in the end, territory domination and "empire" expansion.

RIP to all those who died. I hope the toll doesn't rise much more, and I'm so glad they were to at least somewhat prepare.

I can't help seeing in my head all those people travelling on the roads when this happened, how terrifying that must have been, and wondering whether they made it or not.

This is a common misconception with the CANDU. The CANDU has a positive void coefficient; meaning that if the reator went supercritical there would be no passive safety measure.

Heavy water is a better moderator then normal water. This is why the CANDU reactor does not need enriched uranium. (A moderator is what slows the netrons down so that they can accually hit the fissionable material)
Heavy water=better moderation=No enriched Uranium needed.

A BWR reactor (The one under discussion) has a negative void coefficient. If complete control was lost of this reactor then the reactor would eventually stop by-itself. As the reactor heats up the water will turn into steam which is a terrible moderator.

The control room in a plant has a radiation level that is below backround. 1000x that would be like a ride on a plane for a few hours.

From what I hear the large smoke being given off is due to the fact they are lowering the amount of pressure in the reactor core so that they can pump in fresh water.

BWR and PWRs are two of the safest reactors expesially the PWRs. They are used in subs for christ sake!

EDIT: The web is buzzing with reports that there was an explosion at the plant. If anything is was a cooling unit. I highly doubt that it was the reactor. The reactor itself is in a pressure vessel that is thicker then the pressure vessel of a sub. Not to mention that the cointanment vessel of the reactor ore around 3-4m thick.

I swear not all of us Americans are like this. Every village has an idiot, we just happen to have a lot of idiots, but I swear not all of us are like this.

UPDATE - Police are driving through the neighborhoods on the loud-speaker suggesting that those of us in Tokyo are being advised to keep a few extra bottles of water by our bed tonight

Man, hang tight. Don't keep bottles, keep several CASES of water in case the water system goes. How far are you from Fukushima?

Here is an image showing the Fukushima nuclear power plant before and after the explosion... it looks like the walls and roof were blown off, exposing the skeletal structure of the building. Most are saying this was a hydrogen gas explosion and not a nuclear reaction.

    Before and after Fukushima explosion.

    Yeah thats an explosion allright.

Emergency venting, means that pressure is too high. Visual explosion like that means that they were trying to contain too much radioactive steam and/or coolant.

Full meltdown nuclear explosion may be imminent.

This is the big argument against nuclear. Its too difficult to control even when hundreds of miles away from an earthquake.

Nuclear meltdown would look more like a slingshot into the air explosion, which may yet happen.

Last earthquake a few minutes ago was Scale 6 - not horrible but certainly enough to get my heart beating.

As a result of the quake, one tectonic plate shifted 18 meters. Japan has moved about 8 feet. The earth's entire axis has shifted 4 inches.
We are still getting about 3 after shocks an hour, progressively soft. I'm looking forward to sleeping a couple h...ours soon.

I am watching local Japanese news stations, another quake this morning,5.8 and now a 60 km evacuation order around the nuclear plants.
Lots of other damage not reported by the international news agencies that we typically get here. Interior areas have seen landslides, huge snow avalanches etc etc. Rail service knocked out in North Japan.
